IS Daria CULT TV?

My original post was meant to get us talking about Daria, not analyzing the list (though those comments are FAR better than other crap thats been posted here that is off topic.)

SO, is Daria a CULT show:

PROS:

1) Small group of dedicated fans. While I don't know the stats I would bet Daria has a very high ratio of fan fics per fan. That is, we produce far more fan fiction then we have any right to given our numbers.

2) Quirky off beat show. More subversive than THE SIMPSONS (which I also like alot). The Simpsons makes fun of topics that most people make fun of. Daria goes beyond that.

• People still talk about after its gone.

CONS:

1) The fans have not managed to get the show on DVD. (This is a chicken and egg thing--- if we can't get it onto DVD then it will die and won't be a cult show.)

2) Biggest problem- Its SO small that it has NOT entered the mainstream culture AT ALL. (I'll be DELIGHTED if someone emails me that I'm wrong.) I recall when Babylon 5 fans were DELIGHTED that a question about B5 was on Jeapordy. I've never seen a question about Daria even on BEAT THE GEEKS (another candidate for a Cult Show incidentally)

DILEMMA: A cult show has to have a SMALL and DEDICATED following, but it can't be TOO SMALL. Daria may be TOO Small.

Actually, there were several DVD releases of B&B. Sony Music released the first B&B DVD in 1997 & Time-Life released a B&B DVD collection not too long ago.

I really hope that the Daria DVD petition works out. BTW: I am the guy who has been running a petition to get all the B&B episodes onto DVD. Well, my petition is up to 10102 signatures & I am also having the same problem that the creators of the Daria DVD petition is having & that is the MTV seems to be ignoring the fans of Daria & B&B.

MTV has no respect for their older shows. Basically, once a show leaves MTV's airwaves, re-runs are usually not shown. MTV has respect for their shows such as Osbornes & Real World but shows like Daria, B&B, The State, Aeon Flux, et al are given no respect by MTV.

Maybe so, but...

Watching and listening to the various arguments, it seems to me that Viacom are not interested in keeping the series alive. Like Doctor Who at the BBC, it only takes one wanker at the top to kill (and bury) a show, and it needs a lot more work to revive once it is dead.

A show doesn't necessarily need to enter the mainstream to become a cult show. In fact it is sometimes better if it doesn't, but don't expect to get support straight away. It took Star Trek many years of consistant pressure to get where it is, though they had the advantage of a much bigger fanbase than Daria.

Yes, Daria may well be too small, but she's perfectly formed! :)

It's always safer to say "no". You can't be blamed for not okaying a show, but you can be blamed for okaying a show that fails. You can't be blamed for not increasing a show's budget, but you can be blamed for spending money that results in no gain in viewers/advertisers.

One problem _Daria_ suffers from is that it is a cartoon, hence in majority American opinion a "kiddie show," yet its style of humor would appeal more to (exceptionally bright) teenagers, and adults.

Actually, I _do_ think that Daria and Jane set a better example than the vast majority of "serious" dramatic characters on TV today. They hew to their own moral codes against the pressures of the world, and both of them are strong believers in honor and creativity. I find them inspiring.
