Did anyone see this little article written about our favorite lady? It is hilarious. It was on page 20 of the Parade section of the paper. Well worth checking out. If I have time I will try to write it out and post it here in case some of y'all do not have access to the Sunday newspaper, especially our friends out of the USA area.
Is it online by any chance? And if it is, URL please?
BTW, I also saw Daria in US Magazine this month. I was flipping through the mag in the supermarket (hey, I had time to kill), and I saw Daria as one of the fashion commentators. It was only in two pages though. On.. er.. page 39? I can't remember really, but it was there somewhere.
If memory serves me well (and it often doesn't), Daria was a fashion commentator in another past issue of US magazine (or was it some other mag?). Seems funny that they'd choose her to be a fashion commentator.. considering as Quinn would be a more reasonable choice. Actually, seems funny that they'd choose *any* character out the show, unless one of the staffers watches the show regularly. I wonder if Daria is slowly becoming a cultural pop icon.
Speaking of which, I was at my college's bookstore checking out some textbooks the other day when the cashier noticed my Daria T-shirt. She said something along the lines of "Hey, where'd you get the T-shirt?" Turned out she watches the show too, but she doesn't any longer because she doesn't have cable at her new place. She also said that she had a preference for Jane over Daria. It was really cool, to meet another fan like that, just out of the blue. Any of you guys have similar encounters?
ps: I still say we should have a DariaCon :)
Cheers, Nicole Lee

It might be at www.parade.com or something like that. I had heard about the US mag. articles in which D was present. Yes, she is an icon already, no question. But you know how things are in the U.S. You just can't have a negative acting character as a role model, let alone recognized icon, who has had a major influence on things. And we all know that this is just the case for D, she is more popular than BandBH ever were. At least that is the impression I get from my interaction with other people who watch TV and are somewhat alive and thinking. Yes, I think a DariaCon is in order, but where to hold it? We would definately have to have live Inet streaming of video and audio as well, as people worldwide would want to take part. How about it D fans? A DariaCon!
No question of it, she is an icon to us!
All the time, but I do not have a D t-shirt. However, I hear a lot of conversations going around me, and at least once a week a D conversation can be found, especially out at the movie houses and around the college campus. Speaking of colleges, which one are you attending? I went to UM (University of Miami, FL), two degrees and still wondering what to do with my life that will make me happy, short of going back to school and getting degree number three. But to quote Daria, I do not want to be a professional student. Alas, MTV was only in its early days when I was in school, and there was no cable on the campus, had to go home on the weekends to check out the new videos. Boy George and Culture Club were all the rage then.
sdtrk, after seeing at Downtown Disney ( so I go to Disney....sue me!) Anyways, I was wereing a shirt with Trent on it, and the cashier and I ended up having a conversation about our favorite show~~~ ***Lynnex***
Well, since you're coming to London in April, we could have the first International DariaCon then! You could bring tapes of season four (which, I suspect, we'll still be waiting for). Sarra could book us a room in a pub, if she chooses to, and we could descend from all points North. Or you could all head up to Derbyshire (more central) and I could sort something out. Maybe a room at the Ski Centre, then we could have some activity time too?
Martin (who was one of fewer than six people, IIRC, to attend the first meeting of the UK Palmpilot User Group; so let's not get fixated on attendance numbers!).
Hey, carpal tunnel girl is back! One way you could get to Britain is by hijacking an airliner. Some people got here that way yesterday, all the way from Afghanistan. However if you do travel this way, we'll have to hold the DariaCon in Stanstead Airport in Essex, as that's where all the hijack planes get sent, and they probably wouldn't let you out of the airport.
This has been discussed several times before here, and elsewhere. The real problem, of course, is getting everyone into one place, so why don't we do it this way....
Firtst, what we really need to do is plan that International Daria Con and Ale Festival. <vbg> If the beer is good, and we can find a suitable venue, who knows? Maybe someone from the show would show up. We just offer them a free ticket and lots of good free beer. <g> And, of course, there would have to be a large-screen TV rented for the "ohmyGodathon"-- a marathon that would involve showing all 39+ eps in one sitting, and of course, plenty of good beer for drinking. ;-) If we wait till after seaon 4 and the movie, it'd only take, what... a little over 20 hours if we can get commercial-free versions... ;-)
There also needs to be a Con in the States, too, though-- either in New York City or Vegas, for those who would be unable to make it over to Blighty. Personally, I'd vote for Vegas-- it's juuust cheesy enough, and if we time it with Fall Comdex, we might get some more folks showing up. <g>
Either way, it's kinda cool to meet fellow fans and ATD'ers -- I met Michelle and her husband, Richie, when I was passing though LA, and I met Nicole when I passed through SF. All in all, it was all very cool.
Oh, and Martin, if you're wondering, no, my Aunt *still* hasn't been able to find a new apartment. I'm still waiting for the call, though. Maybe I'll be able to pop by this summer. ;-)
Back to trying to make my computer function properly, rich.

As the Las Vegas resident of the newsgroup let me say this:
Acccckkkk! No! You don't want to time ANYTHING in this town with Fall Comdex. 200,000+ extra people in town. Bad traffic congestion made even worse. A severe shortage of hotel rooms. And if you can get a room, the normally reasonable room rates are jacked up through the roof, because the Comdex crowd has a reputation of not gambling, so the hotels get their money back on the rooms. And I don't think you'd all fit in my condo. Any other time of year except for perhaps during National Finals Rodeo and CES is fine though.
Okay, okay, we won't do it during fall comdex... I just figured it'd let us "enhance" our attendance projections. *Sigh* I guess we'll have to pick some other time of year... Ooo, I know! I bet summer in Vegas is juuuust perfect! ;-)
rich.
Jane: Usually when I have this dream I'm wearing pink taffeta.
*guffaw* Yeah...for those Northerners who actually LIKE to go outside when it's sunny...us Southerners can just watch from the comfort of our air conditioned rooms and pretend to watch some "SSW" marathon. Or a bug that landed on our cotton t-shirts. Whichever. ;)
(And yeah, I said "we"...I'd LOVE to go to Vegas for a DariaCon...it'd be my first convention ever...way cool.)
Hey, I LIKE it hot... remember, you're talkin' to "Iguana Boy" here. I keep my house at 80F year-round. Heh, my grandfather used to put on a long-sleeved flannel shirt when it got below 75, and he'd get a fire going when it got to 65. ;-)
Yeah, we really need to do this... ROADTRIP! ;-) Of course, the real question is, once we all get there, then what? There really isn't a whole lot of cheap Daria trinketry to trade, and I wouldn't think that anyone would play "dress up," so, other than arguing all night about minor points of philosophy and watching a marathon of episodes, what would we do? (I mean, besides saying, "Wow, so *that's* what he looks like..." <g>)
I guess the question is, "So, what are we going to do on our date?" ;-)
rich.
Quinn: I can't be a brain! My friends will hate me!
You're *kidding* me. You *have* to come over here to San Antonio in the middle of August then...it gets REALLY hot down here...you'll LOVE it. We could switch places, even...ummmm, is Chapel Hill *really* hot during the summer? No wait...you could come down here and I could visit my friend Roula in Toronto...yeah, that's the ticket... :)
LOL...yeah, but are you a CRIMINALE? ;)
Oh, there are loads of things I can think of...have Daria Jeopardy!, where we play a version of Jeopardy! featuring tidbits of Daria trivia, and we could have a listening party featuring songs featured on the end credits of the show, we could do the marathon, we could go out and terrorize some unsuspecting restaurants in the gathering area, we could possibly have a guest celebrity with a Q&A session (or at least have a Q&A with a mini-celeb like...Michelle Klein-Hass...or Martin Pollard...or you, paperpusher...or whomever is no-no-notorious around here), we could combine "Daria" with "Whose Line is it Anyway?" (my second fave show) and do improv comedy based on scenes from the show, and you know, if we get lucky enough we could possibly have MTV cover some of it...it'd be good publicity for them seeing as though it *is* an MTV show *and* it could generate more interest in the show...or maybe I'm just talking out of my arse.... :)
No, it's always good to have a few ideas-- I know! You can be our Social Director. Heh, that should be fun, with such a group as us. ;-)
Nah, I'm smart enough to have plenty of options ahead of time... you should always give a lady some choice... and, yes, i know most of you will insert a tacky joke right here, so let me start-- "Hon, we kin go to the Hardee's or the new McDonald's. It's all up to you, Sug."
rich, a thermos of taste-- I always have the right level of taste, be it good or poor, just like a thermos...
Oh yeah, as much fun as getting a root canal from a dentist. ;)
I'm only kidding, I'm sure that in a group of like-minded individuals we'd all get at least a tiny bit extroverted. At least by the second day, that is. *shrugs* I mean, I know even I'd get nervous as heck and VERY quiet at first, but then open up as time went by.
ROTFL!!!!!
(off-topic...like this *is*...we don't have a Hardee's here...weird...keep hearing about it but never run into one...of course, one of our most popular chain fast food places is a local one...Bill Miller's...and yeah, it serves BBQ...and fried chicken too)
Actually, I'd prefer that over some ultra-pricey restaurant. No way I'm gonna force someone to spend $20 per person on dinner. LOL, I'm a bloody cheapskate, I know.
I was gonna comment about your taste, but then decided that would send many minds into the gutter...oh wait, it's too late, I see some minds wandering in the depths already. ;)
*sigh* Pizza King. How I miss working there. The one we had went out of business. They do abound in Indiana around Lafayette though.
I know that was off topic but I haven't posted on here before and just felt like it. Hi, I'm Melissa. I'm 20 (almost 21, only 13 days) and live in Indiana. That's about all I can think of to tell you about me.
Oh, has anybody put up a transcript of the article in Parade? Mine got recycled :(
In Valparaiso, but I work in Harvey Illinois which is where I'm at now while writing this (instead of working, shhhhh). My boyfriend is in Lafayette going to Purdue which is how I know where the Pizza Kings between here and there are at.
Melissa
<much clipping done as it was to big to post with all of it in there...and I don't think anyone wanted FRESH FISH!>
You mean to tell me there are actual Pizza Kings...? Whoa.
*waves* Hiya Melissa, I'm Diane. I turned 21 rather recently, a little over two weeks ago or so, so we're kinda the same age. And I'm from south Texas (but I have a Californian accent, serious! it's how most people around me talk).
I posted up a link to a transcript I'd done up awhile back...well, I finally had a chance to upload it via FTP so it's on much better webspace (if I do say so myself *g*)...the link can be found at

Yes and it was the coolest job I will probably ever have. Total slacker job, unlike the office/computer job I have now.(I'm at home posting this message so as not to confuse people too much with the name that shows up on the group) The one I worked at had cable tv and a sega in each booth you could play for $0.25. When we were slow the owner would take quarters out of the register to pay to watch tv. (I could watch Daria and MST3K at work!) I delivered the pizzas there. It looked very much like the outside of the Pizza King in Daria. It was in a shopping center, big glass window, had a king holding pizza in it. I wonder if any of the writers went to school/lived in the midwest? I don't know where all Pizza Kings are, I've only seen them in Indiana.
Ohhhhhh yeah, you're a mini-celeb all right...you run one of the Big Three fansites...amongst other things...I mean, it's doubtful there's an onliner Darianite who *doesn't* know who you are...so you're a mini-celeb in a niche area...but still, a mini-celeb...and yeah, you've earned it all right... :)
Oh dear. Does this mean I get to sell myself as a celebrity to Spike Milligan fans? I have the Big One website now that Alley's site says "We're redesigning, come back in a week", which its said for a few months. Maybe I should arrange an autograph session to post on alt.fan.goons (and five unrelated newsgroups, just to be like Jim Yoakum). I should tell this Prince Charles. "Yo, look, I'm a celebrity, Charlie!". Or not.

And Diane-- I never thought of myself as anything other than just some guy who tries to give people information and attempt to give folks the means with which to empower themselves. Other than that, to paraphrase Gag Halfrunt, Shrink to the Stars, "I'm just zis guy, you see?" ;-)
Of course, if MTV craps out on us, we could always get Gary Coleman or Danny Bonaduce... I hear that they work for reasonable rates... ;-)
And Joe, the Naked Twister takes place right after the Long Island Iced Tea Drinking Contest (Must be over 21 to play, natch. See what fun you can have now, Diane? ;-)
LOL...actually, the chances are good that you *don't* have to market yourself as such...the online fans probably already recognize you as a mini-celeb...and btw, congrats on that, it's always good when you can create a really important thing for a particular fan base and I'm sure the Spike Milligan fans who come online looking for fansites must be really appreciative of you.
That's a cool idea (as long as I get a crack at trying out for the "Alex Trebec" role)
That would be rather short - maybe expand it to every (or as many as we can find) song from the series.
Sounds like fun.
How hard do you think it would be to attract someone from the show?
That would be so cool to watch and participate in, I'm laughing just thinking about how I might act ;)
REALLY lucky... could you picture one of us insulting Kurt Loder right to his face in such a Daria-esque way that he doesn't even realize we're making fun ;)
Hey cool, we've got ourselves an Alex Trebek! Okay, now I'd probably need some people to help research for the answer-questions. (feeling mind click)
Okay, sure! Just need to weed out the extremely annoying ones. Or maybe we could use the ones that not a lot of people know about, to introduce to a nice-sized crowd. Maybe even a live performance from Splendora -- I mean, what the heck, they did the theme song...
*g* Yeah. Oh, something else popped into my mind...Paula Poundstone suggested this in one of her HBO specials...she said, "Why don't we all just go to Stop n' Go after the show, pretend like we don't know each other, that it's all a big coincidence and they're having a big rush? And then afterwards we can each go up to the counter, one at a time, and buy a Slim Jim. It'd REALLY mess up their inventory -- 'Hey, hurry up with that truck full of Slim Jims...they'll be coming soon...they were in here last week.'"
I have no idea. That's why at first we could have someone do a Q&A who's a mini-celeb who'd already be attending the convention, like Michelle Klein-Hass, Martin Pollard, paperpusher, or even you. Then after this gets off the ground we could eventually have interest from the "Daria" folks...eventually maybe have this be such an event that someone like Glenn Eichler or Susie Lynn Lewis could be our Q&A person...
Ohhhhhhhhhh yeah, I'm already beginning to think of ways to combine the two.
Film & Theater Styles...throw out some suggestions of Film & Theater Styles and have the two improv people up at that time act out a certain everyday scene like two characters from "Daria" Film Dub...take a scene from "Daria", mute the sound, and have the improv people voice the scene as something completely different than the original World's Worst...have the improv people all step down and give examples of something like, "The world's worst way to approach Daria" or "The world's worst thing to teach Sandi".
And then the "winner" would get to read the credits of "Daria" in the style of the host's choosing like reading it in the style of a drunken out-of-work actor or something.
Amongst others.... :)
*guffaw*...I'd pay GOOD cash money to see that happen. But it'd be neat to actually have someone NICE and INTELLIGENT come over...I dunno, like how about John Norris? Or...ummmm...is Alison Stewart still with MTV News? :)
I think we should do a Win Ben Stein's Money parody. At JAFAX (the world's largest free anime convention... the world's ONLY free anime convention...) they had "Win Jim Finney's Anime" which was really funny :)

Hey, an even better suggestion. Now if someone can only donate some prizes to win for the lucky contestant who either wins the regular round or who goes for the gusto, that'd be fantastic. I'm sure that MTV would be generous with such a thing, since it's essentially free publicity and is probably the first MTV-based convention. *crossing fingers*
Michelle Klein-Hass wrote:
Hey, coolness...yeah, keep tabs on when it re-airs, okay? I'd love to point that out to my dad too...my dad likes to watch "Win Ben Stein's Money" and I'd love to say, "Hey, look, there's Michelle Klein-Hass from the Daria newsgroup! I know who that person is!!"
<raises hand> Me! Me! I can help in this department. I can really delve into the minutae if you'd like, or we can keep it to the basics, It's yours or Alexs' to call.
That would be really cool.
LOL, must've missed that one, though.
Doesn't Michelle Klein-Hass talk to or chat with Glen Eichler himself? I'm sure he would know the plausibility of someone from the show dropping in.
I know Carson Daly isn't the most popular MTV personality around here, but how about him since he is appearing in the upcoming Daria TV movie? We could schedule this whole event for when the movie makes it's premiere, it could be the grand finale of the whole thing! If not him I'd settle for a John Norris, though.
Thanks for the nod, but I don't have that much to talk about and, like Michelle and rich, I'm just a bit uncomfortable about being called a mini-celebrity. As long as I only have to answer questions and not do a lecture, I'd be fine with this.
..or maybe another writer for the show or an actor (I know, we're getting really greedy now)
News? :)
Norris or Connolly would probably be best, IMO.
Actually Alison Stewart is now with ABC, she anchors some show that airs from 2-5 every morning (I only know this because I read about it today).
Yes. It's about a man who goes to Disney World for a cure. It discusses toon philosophy and the meaning of mouse ears.

Me too... well, it's on the same coast as me, at least! :-) And for some reason, as exciting as the 24 Hour Church of Elvis in Portland is, I doubt we could structure a DariaCon around it.
