Morgendorfferphiles didn't catch on, but Darianites is widespread. Now I think I've discovered a new name for Daria fans, or at least a name for those whom MTV consider as Daria's target audience.
Following up on a form completed at The Irony Maiden by someone called urban (who didn't fill in their email address, but thanks!), I visited http://www.schweizerfernsehen.ch/tv-guide/prog2.html in order to see what I could find out about _Daria_ in Switzerland. This is what I found today:
17.25 Daria Zeichentrickserie fr Teenager 39 Folgen USA 1997-2000
When I plugged the URL into Babelfish, this was the translation I got:
17.25 Daria Character trick series for tea rodents 39 consequences The USA 1997-2000
I gave up being a teenager long ago, but since I enjoy _Daria_ so much, does this mean I'm a tea rodent?
Anyone want to try listing the 39 consequences of watching _Daria_?
Hwt! We have heard of the glory of "Martin Sylvester" that wrote news:9l8e69$4cb$[email], on the day of 13 Aug 2001:
It must be my years of College-Level German, but that's one of the funniest things I've ever seen. It's as though Babelfish translated an English sentence containing the word "pumpernickel" and came up with "nickel-plated fire engine."
But you know, Tea Rodent is kind of catchy. I like it! "Hi. My name's Mark, and I'm a Tea Rodent." ^_^
Hmm...
1) Realization that cartoon characters are actually alive!
1a) Compulsion to wonder what the characters do when they're between
episodes
2) Belief that every detail of a program, no matter how seemingly
inconsequential, is a vital clue that you must decipher
2a) Belief that you've deciphered it
2b) Surly attitude to those who can't see how obviously accurate your
decipherment was. Well, it was! ^_^
Sudden realization that writing fanfiction isn't weird after all
Determining which videotape brand is the best becomes a matter of critical importance in your life
A deep and abiding loathing for whoever's responsible for the #@%*& MTV program schedules!
Babelfish seems to have gone downhill lately.....I used it to translate French news websites while surfing for articles (my French class discusses articles every Friday) and it refuses to translate words beginning with L' .....but it didn't start that until early January of this year.
It was weird before? ::whistles innocently::
jessica, who can't think of anything else to add at the moment
Babelfish apparently parsed Teenager into Tee-Nager. "Tee" is German for "tea". I have a small German-English dictionary that doesn't show "nager", but it does list the verb "nagen", which means "to gnaw". I guess a "gnawer" is a rodent. At least to Babelfish.
I think "Folgen" is supposed to mean episodes (meaning this Swiss website only goes up thru season 3)
I hope there aren't any German-language Daria fansites using Babelfish to translate episode transcripts.
6. Trying to figure out which Daria character each of your acquaintances most resembles.

Daria: I don't think I can bring myself to say anything encouraging about a place that strip-searches for Cheez-Its.
Hwt! We have heard of the glory of [email] (MMan37x) that wrote news:[email], on the day of 13 Aug 2001:
"Der Nager," literally "the gnawer," is one way of saying "rodent" in German, so "Tee-Nager" could conceivably be translated "tea rodent," which is why I practically fell off my chair when I read Martin's post. Nobody bothered the tell Babelfish that the Europeans like to use American English terms!
Without seeing the actual screen it's hard to say, but "Folgen" could also mean "results," i.e., 39 search results.
It would be pretty amusing to run "Daria" dialogue from English to German and back again through Babelfish. Preferably something that barely makes sense in the first place, like one of Jake's rants. I can't even begin to imagine what "I haven't got a heart! I'm a fluffy rat!" would look like after that trip.
I like that one. Though it's probably just as well for me that I don't know anyone who resembles Sandi or Helen! ^_^
It's hard and lonely to be one's own person. One of the things which has strengthened Jane has been Daria, and vice versa. Which is something they _both_ realized in IIFY.
I'm not much for tea, but I always thought people *drank* tea. I suppose you could gnaw the teabags.
:-)
OK. You completely piqued my curiousity on this one. Here's Quinn's "carry on the Fashion Club mission" speech from "Fat Like Me":
"You're going to carry on the Fashion Club mission. You'll stop the vertically challenged from wearing really fat stripes, point out icky fibers to icky fibers wearers, and fight frosted shadows wherever you go, unless it's at a costume party. You'll hold yourselves up to the highest standards possible. No ankle boot too pointy, no chartreuse too chartreusey, and no mock turtleneck too mocky. And finally, you will never, ever date anyone less attractive than you are... although equally attractive is okay. "
Here's Babelfish's translation into German:
And here's Babelfish's re-translation back into English:
"They will carry on the type and way association mission. They stop vertically challenged from carrying that really fat strips to underline icky fibers to icky the fiber carriers and to fight bereifte shadows, where you go, is it at a costume-taken part is. They hold on up to the highest standards possible. No Knoechelaufladung too pointy, no chartreuse also chartreusey and none mock Turtleneck too mocky. And finally, you become, never at all date everyone, which is fewer attractive, than you... are, although evenly attractive, are okay."
Try to imagine Stacy and Tiffany's reaction to *that*. :-)
There just aren't enough Darias in the world. Or Stacys. Or Amys. Or Quinns.
Too many Tommy Shermans, not enough goalposts.

Brittany: ... getting in the yearbook is the only reason to join French Club in the first place!
Daria: Gee, Brittany, what about your deep love for French people and their culture?
Brittany: Love had nothing to do with it! He was just a lonely exchange student. And I wanted to give him an American goodbye!
Ah.....these are my favorite bits. I wonder who I'm evenly attractive with.
Babelfish makes me laugh. Just for fun once, I ran the first page of Yahoo Japan through the translator. It all started to sound like really bad poetry.
Hwt! We have heard of the glory of [email] (MMan37x) that wrote news:[email], on the day of 14 Aug 2001:
Well, *people* drink tea, but we're talking about rodents, like the squirrel that gnawed up all the Sloanes' wheat thins. ^_^
[snippage]
I'm especially fascinated by the translation of "ankle boot." The word "Knchel" can be used to refer to an ankle bone (or a knuckle bone), but an ankle that still has flesh and skin on it should be translated "Enkel." I'm completely mystified by "Aufladung." I did find another site that translates it (incorrectly) as "boot," but what it actually means is "charge," as in "elektrostatischer Aufladung," electrostatic charge. How anybody could have gotten "boot" out of that I can't even begin to guess; the German word for boot is "Der Stiefel." No anklebone-charge too pointy? Um, yeah, okay...
There's quite a few Kevins around as well, some of them in high places, and Lord knows there are more than enough Angela Li's!
But I thought the whole idea of this thread was that *we* are the "tea rodents."
I think it's a bad phrase to describe Daria fans. Lasagna-gnawer might be better :-).
Actually, "Darianites" is OK.
Interesting that Babelfish couldn't translate "Knoechelaufladung" back into English.
(Does Lawndale High have a German Club? Hmm. ... )
Babelfish also thought the second "icky" was a verb. How does one "icky a fiber carrier"?
Makes me wonder if Babelfish is actually usable for more than amusement.
And O'Neills and Barches. And Vals. And Terry Barry Barlows.

Daria: Suppose you were well known for not caring what other people think of you, and then suddenly you did something that showed maybe you do care a little about what other people think of you. Would that invalidate everything you'd done and said up till then and make you a hypocrite?
That last one, I can definitely identify with! I hate it when I'm looking for a Daria episode and all I can find is The Real World or Road Rules or some other thing. WHO CARES? Not me, that's for certain!
Let's see -- what else is a consequence of watching Daria? Oh, I have one --
6. You talk so much about Daria or about the fanfic you're working on or have completed that your parents know quite a bit about the show!
