People continually point out that there IS a real lawndale.
People who live there have pointed out that it is NOTHING like the lawndale on TV. Just because it has the same name, doesn't mean it's the same one.
In the end, Lawndale is supposed to be as generic as possible, which is why there are no accents.

Not necessarily...there is plenty of questionable landfill that exists all over the country. Love Canal, for example, is in NY. The Meadowlands sports complex in NJ is built on a former toxic waste site. This is why there is an EPA Superfund.

I had to come up with a "real" location for Lawndale which would satisfy the requirements of the story. This introduction at the above URL details why I chose the location that I chose. However, this location is only valid in my own alternate "Daria" universe. In this same alternate universe Daria and Jane are in college currently, and Trent is just finishing up trade-school training as a recording engineer.
Again, THE "OFFICIAL" LAWNDALE IS INSIDE YOUR TV SET.
