I was *really* hoping they'd avoid this development, but I suppose it was just too tempting. I was hoping they'd avoid it because it just seemed a bit too obvious. Oh, well. It'll be interesting to see how they resolve it. Maybe we will get to see Jane's vulnerability. (Sigh, again). Oh, well, again.

Great episode, though.

Hmm, after reading everyone's replies I notice a thread of optimism for Daria and I just can't let that happen - a smiling giggling Daria would ruin the storyline :-)

So excuse me for being pessimistic but what if Tom's parting look over the shoulder was more a nod of encouragement than an amorous gaze? Tom manages to coax Daria out of her impenetrable shell of cynicism a bit, they were having "fun", had a few good laugh's. Who says it goes any deeper?

That said, I suspect everyone else is right.... unless Tom has an identical twin brother or some other warped plot twist.

Poor Jake, stuck in the loo with nothing to read but articles on Hanson... gods! even vaccuum cleaner instructions would be more exciting than that :-)

I loved that whole bit, though it brings me to my only (and its a very minor) problem. You could tell from the end of act 1 Daria wouldn't get back and Jake would be left alone at the end, you could see it coming 3 miles away.

As far as his reading material, about Hanson or the Olsen Twins, he'd have been better using that as the T.P. when Daria didn't get back too soon. There would've been something better on the magazine after he used it than before he used it:-)

This would be a one or two-episode resolution in most "teenage dramas," but I think this is going to take a bit longer on this show given the depth of the characterization. Both Daria and Tom are in a dilemna: Daria's is deeper.

If Daria chooses to act on her attraction, she will devastate Jane. This is unavoidable. Daria is Jane's first real friend; and Tom appears to be Jane's first real boyfriend (regardless of whether she's "gone farther" with other guys). More to the point, Daria has been a role-model for Jane to emulate in a lot of ways. This would be a really deep betrayal from Jane's point of view.

She would also lose Trent's friendship and respect. It's obvious from 405 that Trent sees Jane's relationship with Tom as "serious"; and of course he has always approved of Daria's influence on Jane. He, too, would feel doubly betrayed ... and there's a sense in which he's started to see Daria as a role-model, too.

Even though (if she were involved with Tom) she'd finish outgrowing her crush on Trent, that doesn't mean that she would stop *liking* Trent. In effect she would lose another friend.

There's also a moral factor here. Daria has claimed not to have a conscience, but as this episode showed in several ways (her protectiveness towards the Gupty kid; her assistance of Mr. O'Neill) she really *does* care about people. Daria is abundantly intelligent enough to understand *exactly* what she'd be doing to Jane and Trent, and she would feel like complete dirt for it. Which in itself could destroy any chance of a happy love with Tom, anyway.

Tom would of course lose Jane and Trent's friendship too, but of course he hasn't known them as long as Daria has. However, all the evidence is that Tom genuinely cares about people too, and I don't think he would be happy at the prospect of betraying Jane. Whether or not he likes Daria more, he definitely *does* like Jane.

Ironically, Jane in a way facilitated this development. How? By constantly praising Tom to Daria and Daria to Tom. This is doubly ironic, when you realize that for the last three seasons (one and a half years "show universe" time) she's been trying to get *Daria and Trent* together.

Which of course, if it had happened, might have prevented all this from occurring.

Another reason Daria didn't like Tom initially reveals a great deal about Daria's personality: She's slow to warm up to people. Trust me, I'm quite familiar with this trait. There are some people who never know a stranger and can be on friendly terms within five minutes of meeting. Someone like Daria takes a LOT of time before deciding whether she really trusts this new acquaintance and is willing to bare her soul even to the extent of discussing the weather.

One wonders at the extent of of the Morgendorffer clan's mercenary tendencies that Daria would require a bribe to fetch toilet paper for her stranded father.

Then she turns around and takes some...well I guess you'd call it pity...on Tad and helps him find his family.

Also note she usually clammed up around Trent, with Tom she opened up more than were used to seeing her do. This may have to do with the fact that Tom is on an intellectual and sarcasm weilding level very equal to Daria's I doubt she's met anyone even close to equalling her in the brains dept.

After her talk with Helen in PC could she possibly open up to Helen on this one as well?

I see the rest of the season building this, and resloving it in the movie as well.

Tom's mind works a lot more like Daria's than Trent's. It's interesting to note that Trent seems to like Tom, and for some of the same reasons he likes Daria, I'd bet.

Maybe ... I hadn't thought of that. One problem is that if Daria is thinking what I think she's thinking, she's probably pretty ashamed of herself. Remember, Daria is capable of feeling *extremely* guilty when she perceives herself as violating *her OWN* moral code; she only seems shameless because she doesn't care what most OTHER people think.

Which was how she was feeling in PC, I believe, but this is infinitely more serious than the events of PC, were talking Darias possible future friendship and relationships here, if she wouldn't open to Helen,as Mindy said in another post, she'd probably turn to her writing tom try to sort this out herself, it's worked for the first 17 years of her life, why wouldn't she turn to her writing in potentially one of the hardest times of her life?

I'm a newbie here, but I've always loved watching the Daria eps.

I also loved this episode as well. But of course, I think that things are going to get really exciting between the Tom/Jane/Daria dynamic. And Tom had admitted as much when he told Daria that sometimes Jane had neglected him to for her own concerns. Which leads me to this realization. What is weird this season is the fact that Jane seems to be a little self-centered. I know that the writers were trying to explore some sense of Jane and Daria trying to find themselves in terms of forming their identity, but do they really have to bust up their friendship? And about Trent...where has he been this entire season? Any thoughts about this?

But I can see what they are doing. They really want to downplay the entire Trent/Daria thing because it has been a mark of controversy. Trent appeared to like her, but he himself told her in "Lane Miserables" that she was too young for him. And also, Trent doesn't appear to make a move. So naturally, Tom would be brought in to test Daria's feelings of having the "real thing". But I think that Tom and Daria have more in common than just being a friend to Trent and Jane. I think that their "friendship" (or whatever you call it these days) have had their ups and downs...from jealousy to this mutual attraction.

The other thing that was slightly noticeable about this ep is the fact that Tom never appeared to have fun with Jane. Or he was bored with what she was trying to do. It was with Daria that he started to lighten up (In the past, I had always thought that Tom was "too nice" for Jane). And of course, like in "Lane Mis", Daria never smiled until Trent said something to her. And now, the second smile comes with Tom as they walk along the parade route.

He would also be torn between his attraction towards Daria and blaming her for breaking Jane up with Tom.

Oh, *that* was a clear excuse, especially since the ep ended with him breaking up with Monique. There's only a three-year gap in their ages anyway.

He started to (in "Jane's Addition"), but aborted it when he realized that he didn't measure up to Daria's standards.

They're both brilliant and have similar senses of humor and (I suspect) ethics and morality. They're actually a good match, and they enjoy each other's company.

Tom noticed this too ... and when he fully realized that he was going to miss Daria's company was when he got that really unhappy expression. Which was more than "darn, I wish Daria could come too", it was also "uh-oh, why am I feeling this way about my girlfriend's best friend?"

Perhaps in the sense that Jane could easily manipulate Tom through his sense of responsibility and desire to please her, yes.

Not only did she smile, she laughed. A lot. Very uncharacharistically Daria. She's never laughed like that over Trent. I *used* to call myself a shipper. Now, I think it'd be better if Daria + Tom ever hooked up.

NO NO NO NO NO! I guess, unless something happens between Tom and Jane and they decide to be just friends, I'll be a Daria-Tom anti-shipper. Even if Tom and Jane break up, there will still be lots and lots of Messiness. Especially if Jane and Tom remain close... situations such as this are very, very sticky and have a _lot_ of room for pain for all involved. Although there's a lot of potential character development implicit in this story arc, I hope Daria never acts on this attraction... I, for one, would lose a lot of respect for her as I'm sure Jane and Tom would.

I've had an entire day to think about this...and here's what I've got to say. I think we've got a drastic situation on our hands in the Trent/ Daria/Tom/Jane thing. After all, I anticipate that all parties are going to be bruised by this.

Well, this is the main points that I've been considering:

Yes, you're right. But Jane has more experience with guys than Daria does. Remember "Bobby Bighead?" Or Evan? I tend to think that she is sort of responsible, but does have a good heart. But then again, I think that even if that is the case, Jane has been concentrating on her own needs this quarter and sort of leaving Daria out.

Yes, that is a possible explanation. But of course, when thinking about this, in my most optimistic mode, I would think that Trent would be challenged to step up to the plate. But in my most cynical mode, I think that Trent would flake out--just like the time in "Jane's Addition" where he was asked to write a thirty-second song [!]. I think that if Trent were pushed to extremes--especially if he saw that he was losing Daria to Tom--he might be compelled to act. But then again...Trent may chicken out. After all, Trent is sort of dealing with some rough patches of his own--if any indication of the "tent incident" is the case.

Well, you never know whether Trent was sure he was over Monique. I think that he was trying to prove a point that he was going to move on. But you have to place things into consideration. Trent is always trying to go back on his promises. And to throw another wrench into things, I think we haven't heard the last from her. She may pop up again--knowing that Trent has to save face if Daria really tries to pursue her feelings with Tom.

That's kind of true, but of course whether Daria could live with herself is another matter :-)

Or maybe he understood it perfectly and wanted to avoid the blame by pretending not to get it. Or maybe to him, school isn't in the category of "important" things. Maybe it wasn't for Jane either, until she met Daria.

Yes!!! I was hoping I wasn't the only one who noticed this! It's been a lllloooonnnnggggg time since I've posted anything in the forum, but episode 406 really got me interested. Everyone seems to think Daria will do something drastic to spoil her friendship with Jane. NO NO NO!!! I think it is quite obvious that even though the feelings may be almost mutual, it is definitely more Tom than Daria. Note:

1. Daria said that it was too bad Jane wasn't there to watch the fire with Tom. Tom disagreed, saying that Jane wouldn't be paying any attention to him. (In a sense, he was telling Daria that she was more caring than Jane.) 2. When Ted took a yearbook picture of the happy "couple" Daria was quick to point out that they were not a couple. Tom just said he didn't go to their school. 3. Tom offered Daria his jacket, but Daria gave it back soon afterwards. 4. Tom seemed to really want to take Daria along on their pizza run, but Daria seemed to be searching for a way out of it. 5. Tom looked BACK over his shoulder which is somewhat more serious than just watching someone leave like Daria did.

There might be more (or I might've misinterpreted something...), but I only saw the episode once. I think this plot twist may end up in the breakup of Tom and Jane....not the loss of friendship between Daria and Jane. Something to the extent of Tom trying to tell Daria how he feels, and Daria blowing him off because she could never do something like that to her best friend. Besides, Tom and Jane really haven't been going out that long anyway. Half a season, or probably somewhere around three months.

I am not certain that Tom thinks of what he's feeling as anything more than a desire for Daria's company, even if he *is* feeling more than that. Remember, Tom *already has a girlfriend.*

Daria, on the other hand, recognizes the danger of them winding up being more than friends to each other (I say "danger" because of what it would do to Jane), and she also yearns for a man. Her emotions are thus more violent than his.

I think that if Tom and Jane broke up first, then and only then would there even be a *chance* that Daria could go out with Tom without losing Jane's friendship. If Daria actually *took Tom away from* Jane, Jane would (rightly) see this as an incredible betrayal of her by two people she loved.

I think that Trent figures that dating beautiful women is one of the perks of success in the music biz. Which it is, if that's what you want. Remember, at that point there is no evidence that Trent was in a relationship with *anybody* (when he later met Monique he hadn't seen her in a *while*).

Tom's never actually expressed any opinion in this regard. We can't assume this to be the case from the evidence (he goes out with Jane, but looks longingly at Daria). No way has there been enough information given yet.

She didn't actually have a "relationship" with either of them, though. She made out with Bobby Bighead in a laundry room (there's no evidence they went particularly far); she paid attention to Evan for a while; she walked off with Jesse once and came back holding hands, later failed to connect with him in a conversation. That's a thin basis to build upon to assume that Jane's fancy-free, so to speak. Though I do agree with you that Jane isn't the marrying type in general.

Daria's definitely monogamous and very serious-minded when it comes to romantic attraction. She also thinks in terms of marriage as the desired outcome of a relationship. That's obvious from LM and WWIH.

Yes, I did. In fact, when I saw the episode, it threw me for a loop. It caused me to weigh everything that I've seen before in terms of Tom and Daria since last season. And boy, I never truly thought that things would take this type of turn. But of course, the juicy stuff is coming. Let the games begin!!!! 8)

I agree with you, but I don't think Daria will do anything really drastic. Daria's actions have always been either subversive or the path of non-action. Therefore, I don't think she will intention hurt Jane or Tom. But then again, Tom did try to reach out to Daria more than once since "Jane's Addition". And Daria, who was really unwilling to side with Tom, unwittingly finds herself agreeing with him. Notice Tom's barb about Trent and the farming job in "JA". Furthermore, I think that Tom does like Daria because she doesn't really push anyone to do anything. Jane is always trying to get people to try new things (notice the entire "match-making" episode regarding Trent). Furthermore, Jane often strikes out to do things herself. So, she somewhat has a "My way or the highway" mentality. But then again, I am still figuring out why she wanted to ditch painting and try out for the cheerleading team in #405.

Yes, and no. Daria did blow Tom off on several occasions. But I think that last look was more of shock than anything. She realizes that she likes Tom more than she should have. And of course, I also think that she is weighing the options in her head. After all, this is a rather horrible dilemma. Daria is not like Quinn--who can easily steal someone's boyfriend and live with it. But then again, has Daria *ever* been place in such a position before? NEVER! After all, when it comes to love, Daria has always been either ignored, laughed at or left behind. Who can forget the entire "Monique" episode when Trent didn't even tell her that he was going out with Monique? That alone is what Daria expects. Not the other way around with Tom. After all, Tom is trying to break some ground with Daria. And of course, the ball is in Daria's court, so to speak.

So, I think the feelings are there. Whether it is mutual, that is something that has to be explored during the later part of the season. And oh, boy, oh boy...I *can't* wait!

Probably, yes. Note that even when she hangs out with Daria it's often Jane doing art, Daria reading or watching TV, and the two exchanging occasional comments. They're good at "being alone together", which is common with really good friends.

Except that the only member of her family she really likes is Trent. And he's not much social contact, since he's usually asleep.

Whoever she was making the comparison to, I doubt Jane would have known who it was. Tom obviously did. So I guess the fact that they "get" each other's weird references is just another reason for Daria to like (and maybe *like*, for lack of a better word) Tom and for Tom to like (and maybe *like*) Daria..

For now, at least....it was never said that it wouldn't happen, just not at the present time. And Trent is Jane's brother. He might be a little disappointed in Daria and who knows how she'd react to that? What I'd really like to see is an episode focusing on Tom and Jane. Now, I really can't say for sure, cause I wan't here after that ep aired, but from many reviews that I read, I got the impression that people were generally thinking that Daria and Trent's conversation at the end of JA was "ending" the relationship/crush. But the song says otherwise. (I dug up the lyrics to be sure.)

I've done some rethinking and my personal take on this: They're just good friends. What may happen though, is that through some sort of misunderstanding, possibly gossip, and a series of coincedental events, Jane will see the two together, think the wrong things, and want to break up w/Tom, and may never want to see Daria again. Typical plotline, amd Daria and Tom wll have to try to explain that they're just good friends.

If Trent will ever come back into the picture again it will be here. He'll try to help them as he did in "The Misery Chick", he will be the go-between as he likes Daria as a friend(maybe more?), and he doesn't want his sister to be hurt. While doing this a spark may rekindle, as this would be a big responsibility and a serious cause for Trent to undertake. If he is willing to take the responsibility serious enough, Daria may(though this is still a reach) see something in him yet, and this whole plotline may take another twist back onto the old road. This is just my speculation, I'll probably be shown wrong in July, but if I'm not? Hmm......

I really should've seen this coming; I am ashamed I didn't see it coming. The two of them were just so *perfect* for each other, and Daria had the shields up a little *too* high, for just someone who initially feared for her friendship with Jane. It's obvious why, now; look what happened when they slipped for a moment.

There is trouble in the future; mark my words. Of corse, this could just be me overlaying my own life upon theirs. My best friend/roomate and I just finished competing over the same girl a few weeks ago. No hard feelings on either of our parts, officially (especially considering he was the one who came out on top, and I *never* hold a grudge, or at least I haven't in years). But we do compete a bit more viciously in gaming, tend to disagree on matters political and philosophical a bit more vehemently, and overall, there just seems to be a slight bit of friction.

But, there *will* be trouble. But, I mean, what is Tom doing? Why is he doing this? He went to all that trouble to make sure Daria wasn't going to kill his relationship with Jane. It seems that she's destined to do so no matter what her position. :-/

I am absolutely certain Trent is going to save the day in this. Not as a potential beau for Daria, but as Jane's older and (perhaps just a bit) wiser brother. He knows all three.

Then again... I've been there too. And a screwed up situation like this can destroy the middleman. But Trent seems to be sufficiently laid back to weather the storm without too much trouble. And he cares enough to actually try to help.

Enough of my rambling. I'm just disappointed I missed the first wave of discussion.

Obvious? It only became obvious to me about halfway through this episode. I mean, yes, the whole "first-they-hate-each-other-then-they-love-each-other" thing HAS been done to death on movies an TV but Tom has never hated Daria, and for that matter has always seemed genuinely enamored of Jane.

I liked this episode. Not only did it build up to be emotionally intense, but it managed to stay very funny throughout. Lots of other interesting things happening, too. Some things I particularly liked:

1) Reappearance of the Gupties. Looks like without Daria's steady influence, they returned to normal, darn it all. I loved his exchange with Sandi:

TAD: "You're a mean old witch!" SANDI: "I am *not* old!"

2) Reappearance of Ted (with an 'E'), if only because it was interesting to see he still existed, and was at least semi-friendly towards Daria.And it was nice to see such continuity on the show, not that we haven't come to expect it.

3) Fashion Club drama: It seems Sandi has redirected most of her negative energy towards Stacy, who seems to be heading for a breakdown any day now. I also liked that Tad's animal testing complaint got brief but genuine concern from Quinn, although I think Sandi's response convined her a little too easily.

4) Reappearance of Ms. DeFoe: She just reminds me of a flaky art teacher I had a couple years ago. I could have gotten an A in that class instead of a B, if I could get a straightforward explanation out of her as to what "negative space" was, or just what she expected when she told me to "grow as an artist".

5) Upchuck: His car horn: again with the song! I also liked the cop's name for him: "Don Guano".

6) This list is definitely running too long, but also Kevin and Brittany's possible breakup (again, but I'm not expecting much), Jodie and Mack's scenes (I was hoping they WOULD ditch the parade and help Daria, but considering the story line, I guess they'd be in the way.). This was just a great episode that brought about one major development, but threw in plenty of other interesting tidbits that didn't get in the way of that development. Probably my favorite this season. And I thought it would be another filler ep...

I liked this. Their reappearence was interesting, I was expecting something to have changed since "Pinch Sitter", but as you said w/out a constant Daria influence, the Gupties were "reprogrammed". Tad actually moved the plot along effectively, at first I thought it would just be a gratuitous appearance, but I was wrong. Especially after he was lost again at the end of act 2.

Completely out of the blue appearance. He's too nieve to hold anything against Daria for what happened before, but then again he does have that picture of Tom and Daria, which you know will appear again later in the season or the movie. He probably means no harm, but may cause a great deal of trouble if/when that picture comes out into the publc and Jane finally sees it.

Typical of them. Daria's using Quinn as a hostage of sorts to prevent the makeover was hilarious. That whole sequence with her , Tom, and Tad was one of if not the funniest scene of the ep.

About time. She's nay uttered a word since "Arts N' Crass" so it was good to at least see her. Hell even that fat, blond kid now has an alter-ego, Ms. DeFoe is the only speaking character, who has appeared in at least 3 speaking roles and doesn't have an alter-ego, nothing specific about this, just good to finally see her back, even if only for a minimal role.

It fits him.

It's been hinted all season that a breakup appears imminent, just wonder how it'll be treated, seriously, or in comic relief fashion.

Jodie mentioned that she's a role model for the other African Americans at Lawndale in "Gifted", good to see it illustrated here.

I was also thinking filler ep as well, but I was very pleasantly surprised with what I saw. Good to see cameos of a lot of people we've seen before, from some people from Middleton, to even Dr. Shar in the background, you could play spot the cameo with this one and have alot of options. Definitely the best ep this season, and possibly best yet in the entire series.

Jodie *is* a good role model, even when she doesn't try too hard to be. But I think it's wrong that she's having this much pressure put on her to be the "perfect black girl." She's inherently a very good person, but she's likely to crack under this much pressure, eventually.

I don't know where this goes, but FWIW, it looked to me like Jane and Tom weren't really on the best of terms to begin with, and I bet that adds sufficient impetus to move the plot along to its inevitable conclusion. It seemed like they were continuing long-standing gripes with each other. Add to that Jane's penchant for, well, ditching guys as she goes along, and Tom may wind up alone without any effort on his part. ;-)

Of course, I've only seen it once, so I can't say for sure whether we're going to have to revamp the Geek Code entirely... ;-)

I don't know if their breakup is "inevitable", but if they do it'll probably be because of Jane's unwillingness to and inexperience at accommodating other people. At compromise.

We've only ever seen Jane interested (for more than about half an hour) in two other guys: Jesse and the one from "See Jane Run". In neither case is it really obvious that anything much ever happened. Tom seems to be her first serious boyfriend.

It's always been something of a soap opera. It's just a *good* one.

I'll have to disagree with that. It's been a comedy/drama, but not a soap opera. Soap opera implies that each ep isn't complete in and of itself-- almost every Daria ep has a definite beginning and ending. There may be some questions that are raised, but like any other sitcom, there's always a certain degree of resolution in every ep, unlike the soap opera format, in which resolution usually occurs in the middle of the episode, only to have it broken right at the end. It's more like a sitcom with a bit of a story arc.

The only worry I have is that this whole plotline gets blown out of hand and takes over the show-- I prefer a show to break new ground, rather than for one to beat a certain plotline/issue to death.

I didn't say that she didn't like him. I just said that this kills off that crush completely, IF we're to use the interpretation of the ep that everyone is using. She probably does like Trent, but she doesn't *like* like Trent the way she seems to *like* like Tom. God, I sound like an 8th grader. ;-)

I'll admit...it's kinda ambiguous. Daria's final look could mean "Damn...I think he's liking me a little more than he should, being he's Jane's boyfriend and all." But I think Daria's silence for the rest of the episode indicates a little more. She couldn't even compose her thoughts enough to respond to Mr. O'Neill after he accused her of having school spirit. I personally took that as her pondering the nasty dilemma she's in.

Very good point, if her mind wasn't clouded with the events of the day, you know we'd have gotten a classic barb. I hadn't thought of it that way. Basically she was in shock over what just happened and may have been thinkingt of all the possibilities and problems these events may cause.
