An Unrepentant Trent `Shipper

Looking at the situation at the end of _IICY_, there is still a strong possibility of a relationship with Trent in Daria's future. Though Daria is going off to college, she is still going to be close friends with Jane, which means that she is likely to run into Trent from time to time. Daria is no longer underage, and she's actually had a boyfriend so she's less likely to assume that her boyfriend has to be perfect.

It's true that dating Tom hasn't exactly prepared her for the nature of most men. Tom is courteous almost to a fault, gentle, highly tolerant of Daria's eccentricities, and sexually undemanding. He's also intelligent and understands Daria's sense of humor. Compared to Tom, the vast majority of guys she would meet in college would impress her as crude and stupid, and repulse her with the speed of their advances.

This is actually a _good_ thing for Trent `shippers though, as it means that Daria is less likely to find a relationship with a college classmate which would preclude her involvement with Trent. And Trent's good points are ones which make him superior as a potential boyfriend from Daria's point of view: he is also courteous, gentle, and highly tolerant of eccentricities; we don't know how he deals with women he is attracted to, but he has never struck me as very sexually aggressive. Trent's _education_ is spotty, but his _intelligence_ is high; and after a semester of college, Daria might be very tired of over-educated idiots (she'll likely encounter more than a few at the lecterns).

I could easily see Daria winding up in a serious romantic relationship with Trent while she's at college (or when she's home for the summer).

What do you guys and gals think?

Here's a truly weird fanfic idea: Trent and a Fashion Club girl! Which one? The only likely possibility, IMHO, is Stacey. She's shown some willingness to associate with guys the rest of the Clubbies wouldn't go near --- such as Upchuck! So how about a Stacey-Trent relationship?

How would they meet? Anybody wanna offer any theories?

It doesn't have to end well, BTW. Remember, "Daria" never stopped being a comedy, at least in part.

That's not unlikely -- there've been lots of model/musician relationships (think Ric Okasek & Paulina Poriskova, David Bowie & Iman, Christie Brinkley & Billy Joel, Rod Stewart & -- oh, pick one.)

A relationship b/t Trent & a FC member -- hmm . . .

1. Could Trent & Tiffany stay conscious & alert long enough to even REMEMBER they were dating? Would Tiffany bore him into a coma by constantly asking him "Does this make me look fat?"

2. Sandi + Trent . . . no, wait, how 'bout this: Sandi the witch + Max the wannabe criminale! (Provided she could handle riding, much less being seen, in The Tank.)

3. Stacy + Trent -- this I like, especially since Stacey's assertiveness began emerging in Season 5.. (Unless Trent's slowness sends Stacey into a tirade a la "Fat Like Me.") In any case, since Trent doesn't seem to have the heart (or the energy) to treat Stacey as a doormat, that may boost Stacey's self-esteem even more. Her confidence might then rub off on Trent & make him a better, more enegrgetic person & musician as much or more than Daria's talk in TRW. A potentially symbiotic relationship. 4."Daria's Sister" + Trent: Sure, Quinn's matured since IIFY, but would she still go out with someone who wears what looks like Salvation Army rejects? Moreover, would Quinn have the heart to date her sister's former crush, even though Daria and Trent were never more than friends at most? Or, would she refrain from dating Trent out of respect for Daria?

"Course, I'm basing all these relationships on the Season 5 (pre-IICY) Fashion Club. Maybe they'' all have changed after high school (which for the FCs would be at least 2 years after IICY). Who knows how much more they would've changed after high school (at least 2 years after IICY).

Enough speculation on my part for now.

Having to ride to a date in The Tank is reason enough for Sandi not going out with Trent. (Trent owned a beat-up car at some point in the series, too.) But it wouldn't get that far. Sandi would probably laugh if somebody who looked like Trent dared to ask her out. This ties with Quinn + Trent for least likely match-up.

These are pretty much my reasons for thinking about it. I don't think Stacey would tell her 3 girlfriends who it was, however. She'd also have Trent take her someplace Tiffany, Quinn, and Sandi would never go. (Not hard to do, come to think about it.)

No, I don't think she'd date someone who dresses like Trent. Not unless her values change. A couple of years of college might do it.

Does Quinn even KNOW that Daria had a crush on Trent? My guess is she never noticed. I don't recall Daria mentioning it to her in the whole run of the series. (Quinn treated Daria as an embarassment (and vice-versa) until about mid-way through Season 5.)

Who knows indeed? My fanfics are centered on the Fashion Club during their senior year at LHS, after Daria graduates.

Not a bad idea! Comedy Central wouldn't censor it "for the sake of the kiddies" (actually, for their parents) like Daria did.

One obvious way for them to meet would be for Stacey to see the Spiral play. She's seen them before, of course -- at Brittany's party.

One problem from Stacey's point of view is that Trent is a very messy person. One problem from Trent's point of view is that Stacey is really, emotionally, "a kid." Remember, at the point the series ends, Stacey is what, 16 years old? And she _acts_ more like a slightly naive 14 year old.

I think that it would have to be set a few years in the future for this to be more than Stacey tagging along after Trent.
