Hmmm.

Things that weren't surprising

Daria and Jane making up for real Brittany and Kevin ending up in the ice cream truck O'Neill really screwing up at his summer camp

Things that were surprising

Daria and Tom aren't history Mack and Jodie having an 'aw that's sweet' scene DeMartino Not sucking at the summer camp

Things that were stunning Quinn

OK, the bi- non-issue. It didn't seem to me that Jane had any real wavering. She had a momentary question, but realized that she had been fed a line immediately afterward.

Daria not being able to reach through to the camper, I haven't decided yet if I like the last minute reversal of the failure.

Of course, the big thing, other than Daria having to come to grips with actually having a social life, was the development with Quinn.

Daria (the show) thus far has been pretty good about not backsliding characters. If they are going to continue that, then Quinn can't really return to being completely oblivious to knowledge. She'll continue to hang with the Fashion Club, but the discarded skin should be harder and harder for her to wear.

And the talk between Daria and Quinn at the end. Everything about it was good, including Daria surreptitiously shooing Jane away from the door and Jane picking up on it, and the structure of Daria's speech to Quinn, where everything she was telling Quinn applied equally to Daria and Tom, and Daria would clearly be aware of that. I especially liked Quinn pointing out that Daria's adopted persona fulfills exactly the same function as Quinn's.

I wasn't disappointed in it. Well, except for having Dave Kendall cover up some of the alter egos.

should be enough.

I have to say that I really liked this. I was just left with a warm, fuzzy feeling when it was over. Nearly everyone connected emotionally with someone. Most of the cast grew in some way or another.

Connections and Failed connections [not in chronological order]: Jane and the artist(I forget the name) [disillusionment and failed physical connection] DeMartino and the Ok to Cry Corral kids [success] O'Neil and the Ok to Cry Corral kids [failed] Daria and Eric? [Daria jr.] Daria and Quinn [twice!] Daria and Jane [still be fricken friends] Daria and Tom [kissing finally, and the car windows looked fogged over at the end] Tom's family and Daria and Daria's family and Tom Jodie's parents and Tom's parents [for the club] Quinn and the tutor [learning can be interesting] Quinn and the tutor [I bet this was the first time anyone ever turned her down] Mack and Jodie [finally] Kevin and Brittany [pool fight,CPR,...] Jake and humor [that was a joke, right?] Jake and Helen [Why did the chicken cross the road?]

Things that stood out for me: Daria doing everything she could to drive Tom away and then feeling bad about it afterward. Quinn has developed depth! I almost like her and her pedagogy. Daria and Jane are friends again. Daria reaching out to Eric? [Daria jr.] I would expect we'll see more of him this season.

It was just good.

Did you notice the "outtakes" over the end credits, similar to those at the end of "A Bug's Life"? I laughed at different points in the movie (and loved the whole thing), but I was ROFL with all the "mistakes" at the end. When it's a live movie the outtakes are just throwaway bits, but to animate "mess-ups" is true dedication.

Maybe I missed something, but I didn't think of those as featuring "mistakes." It looked to me more like they were intended as stills from bits that got "edited out." I've noticed that the Daria animators seem to have an easier time showing extreme facial expressions in stills and you could definitely see that there.

All in all, I agree.

How about this for a failed connection: Daria and David!
Was I the only one yelling at the TV set "DARIA YOU FOOL PAY ATTENTION
TO DAVID"? (All right, so I didn't actually yell it out loud. It
might have disturbed my roommate a bit.) I must admit that I've never
much cared for Tom and he and Daria don't seem like a couple with a
future to me. What do they have in common?
David, on the other hand, seems absolutely perfect for Daria. I
was sort of expecting that Quinn would wind up jealous of Daria for
once...you can see all sorts of interesting dynamics in that story line.
Well, I can only hope for future episodes. David had enough screen time
that he doesn't seem like just a one-time character.

[snip]

Does everyone think it's fairly clear that they had sex at the end? There was a prominent shot of the car that certainly carried some sort of implication but I'm not sure if it's absolutely clear-cut. I suppose that Daria and Tom are now like Beren and Luthien in that people can speculate eternally about whether they did the deed.

Why do you think she tried to drive him away? Some might say she was scared of her own feelings. I think she could tell he wasn't quite right to her. He's the first reasonably attractive, non-jerk guy who's showed serious interest in her and that's been adequate to get quite a reaction out of her, but it's not enough for a long-term relationship.

It was worth getting up early for.

I don't think that they had sex. For one thing, they were sitting in a car _parked right in front of her parents' home_, and also right out on the street where anyone could pass by and look in. (Indeed, where they were visible _from the Morgendorffer front [address]). So, unless you want to assume that they just lost control, I don't think they did anything which would involve disrobing.

For that matter, I don't think that they even went all that far. Tom said something about "we can take it slow": the clear implication being that he wasn't going to immediately make any serious physical demands. Earlier, when he complained "We _don't_ do anything", he was probably referring both to her avoiding him and Daria's relative prudishness.

On the other hand, that was one _long_ kiss. It would be reasonable to assume that they were at least making out ... second, maybe third base (to use the American baseball analogies).

I can't really tell, yet, whether he's "right for her." They are certainly attracted to each other, and relate to each other well. I think the main problems with him, if these _are_ problems, are:

  • He's subconsciously a snob (note his attitude toward the Lanes),

2) He's too emotionally detached (note his attitude toward Jane when he "got bored") and thus not really serious about the whole thing.

Honestly, I would not count Trent out in the long run.

okay, look everybody, they weren't freaking doing it, okay? for one thing, there is no evidence in Daria's previously-established character (even as that character becomes more and more subjective) that would indicate she would do something that serious in a car right in front of her house. she's a bit more of a lady than that, methinks (and her personality, as far as i can tell, falls under that of the Idealists [if you're into the whole Kiersey Temperament Sorter/MMPI scene], who don't change their core values like EVER). and Tom seems like too much of a gentleman to engage in such a trashy display as well.

for another thing, the car wasn't shaking or anything. and i think i'd stop watching the show if it had been, because that would indicate the producers had allowed the writers from "undressed" to hadnle the last scene. sheesh.

Ok... time for Sara to whip out the reality stick. At the beginning of the episode Daria _clearly_ blushes when Tom kisses her when he picks her up for their date. To assume that they would have sex in a car in front of her own house is - IMHO - completely out of character. Yes, she did become more assertive with Tom towards the end of the episode but that in no way indicates that she would be willing to have sex on the street. Plus, at the beginning she had not met his family yet. And she wasn't avoiding him then.

My opinion on his comment was that he was just upset that she never wanted to see him... I tend to read a lot less into the episodes than many others who frequent this newsgroup. I think taking it slow for your average high school female means something very different than for Daria, who's never had a boyfriend before, has only one real friend and puts up many walls between herself and others. I think Tom just wants to get past the walls first and make sure they're down before sex even comes into the picture.

Personally, I don't think they're even up to anything more than kissing... I think that would be dealt with at some other time. We know Daria's not too thrilled with her body, boyfriend or no boyfriend. I think that there are way to many self-conciousness issues before we can assume anything about them having sex.

I would not necessarily agree with this. They are in high school. Most people do not have seious relationships then, as I don't think they should (few exceptions). They are still young and there is no reason to get serious with someone who you "get bored with". The whole point of dating is to figure out what qualities you are looking for and which ones you are not. I think you end up hurting more people in the long run if you pretend to be interested as opposed to telling the truth. Now, if he just didn't suck face behind her back with her best friend, I would have said Tom did the honorable thing.

Now this I would agree with. I think Trent has appeared in a more favorable light this season - that may go somewhere.

Sara

- as a side note, I am _so_ glad that Tom is not Eric's son as some people were wildly speculating a few weeks ago. I never thought that was a plausible option and would have been extremely dissapointed if they added it as a tie in.

Or is Daria TOO thrilled with her body? Remember "Quinn the Brain"? Daria, dressed in Quinn's style, put Quinn to shame. She has a slim and attractive figure, a bit more womanly than Quinn's girlish cutesiness. It took a lot of self-confidence to conceive and pull off that stunt.

But Daria, as she herself has admitted, often works hard to keep people away and at a distance. Keeping her body hidden under unflattering clothes helps serve that purpose.

<bangs gavel authoritatively> Point of order - one can have a very attractive body and still not like it and not like showing it off. She knows she _can_ look like Quinn but I don't think she's comfortable enough in her own skin to do so. She didn't want to dress like Quinn, she just did it out of necessity.

I was just making a point that Daria tries to hide herself behind baggy clothing so I thought it was absurd to think that she already got naked with Tom.

I meant that Daria seems uncomfortable with her body and doesn't like showing it off. I don't think she sees herself as unattractive, just that she's not comfortable showing anything off, for whatever reason. That's what I originally meant about self concious - not in the "I don't look good" way but in the "Everyone's staring at me and it's weirding me out so I prefer to wear clothes that hide my body" way. If she _did_ decide to go all the way with Tom, I think she'd be smart enough to arrange a more private situation than parking right in front of her parents' house!

I agree. While I'm not a major Tom `shipper (I see some potentially fatal flaws in him), he's a nice guy, not a hormone-crazed beast. I don't think he's sexually pushy ... indeed one of the flaws I see with him is that he may be too emotionally _detached_. And if he was, I don't think that Daria would let him take advantage of her.

Maybe the reason she blushed is that she was having, um, _unusual_ thoughts at that point.

It wouldn't be the first time sex caused someone to act out of character. I've seen it in real life. But now that I've thought about it some more, I think you're _probably_ right.

In that case he's much more patient than your average eighteen-year old guy. (You know the joke: They think about sex one time per day because they think of it all day.) He may be willing to wait, but I think sex is already part of the picture...at least as a possibility.

Daria may not exactly be thrilled with her body but I've never thought it was a huge issue with her. I've always sort of visualized her as one of those people I thought was beautiful though they didn't satisfy conventional standards of beauty. (Unfortunately all such women I've known in real life had defective personalities.)

You're right. But Daria doesn't seem to have much middle ground between "ironic detachment" and "absolute seriousness." Can you imagine how boring (as well as unrealistic) literature would be if everyone always did what they should?

Now there's something I learned the hard way. Though I guess I wasn't the person who should have been learning it. The individual in question...well, I probably shouldn't get into it.

We'll see.

I actually think that Daria, once she gets over her fear of committment, will be perfectly capable of having a serious relationship. And I've always had her pegged as the sort of woman who isn't satisfied with anything less.

(Jane's actually similar to her in that respect, which is one reason she was so horrified when Tom broke it off with her, and why she was shocked by Allison's attitude. Jane's general flaw is that she is impulsive, and overly trusting once she decides to trust at all).

Well ... "prudish" might be the wrong specific word. "Serious", "passionate", "highly moral", "perfectionistic", and "intense" might be more precise descriptors. I don't think she'd be comfortable with a merely short-term sexual relationship, is my point.

I agree with this, however. I think it was a one time thing, it would be great to see him again especially with above scenario, but I doubt it.

Odd coincedence, David looks exactly like one of my friends, and they have the same last name, Sorenson.

Some random thoughts on the movie.

My first thought as the movie started was "Oh my God! That's Mr. O'Neil! I'm blind!" :)

I found it interesting that Brittany was merely impressed by Daria dating Tom, while Jodie seemed to be the one who was shocked. (Loved that line "Hell's frozen over, and Tom's here with me.") Brittany's pre-existing respect was simply elevated a notch or two but either Jodie had a lower opinion of Daria than we've been led to believe or she thought the same thing that many viewers have: "Damn, Daria's love life is going better than mine."

I liked the entire Fashion Club checking-out Tom as they walked past him. Still can't wait to see their reaction to learning that he's dating Daria.

Ms Li is definitely losing it. "Show your school spirit with the gift of urine." That's over the top, even for her.

When Quinn semi-told off Sandi at the end, I gave the TV a thumbs-up and shouted "Yeah! Go Quinn!" I can definitely see a sort of symbiotic relationship developing between Quinn and Mr. DeMartino. He gets to see a student that he had previously dismissed as hopeless benefiting from his teaching, reaffirming his career choice. Quinn gets praise from a teacher to confirm her intellectual development and superiority to the Fashion Fiends.

*Did anyone else notice that the question that DiMartino asked Quinn was the same one that he asked Daria in "Esteemsters?*

That was kind of weird. I'm assuming (please correct me if I'm wrong) that this is the first time Quinn's had DiMartino as a teacher so both of them got asked the same question on their first days in his class. Strange coincidence...

No, she had him last year. Remember, her "guardian angel" saved her from having to answer his question about Roosevelt's Big Deal when she hadn't done the reading. I think she probably just has him for a different history class this time (European History last year according to David, possibly American History this year?). Since he DID have her last year, he was probably all the more impressed by her newfound knowledge.

I don't know. I think that it was a treat for the fans that have been there since Day One. A nice sense of completion. Whatever.

I think in NY high schools it goes: 1 year of World/Euro history (about up to the Reniassance), another year of the same (1500- present), then American History Junior year, then Politics in Government or some equivalent to that Senior year.

This is a stretch, but perhaps it's like the system we use in our high school with American and English Lit. Each is offered every other year . . . so you can be a junior taking American Lit, since you took English Lit last year, with sophomores in your class because English Lit won't be offered until next year for them. Next year they'll be juniors in English Lit with new sophomores . . . who will take American Lit THEIR junior year.

As for Social Studies in our school, it goes: Freshman: Economics/Civics Sophomore: History of American Democracy Junior: No requirement (but there are plenty open, and most people try to get into Psych and Soc) Senior: American Government.

Wow, that's weird. Maybe it's because I went to a small school, but we all took similar English courses at around the same time. Well, sorta. There were major differences in sophomore level honors English and regular sophomore English, and senior level AP English and regular senior English, but at least there were SOME similarities.

Ours was:

Freshman: World Geography Sophomore: World History Junior: U.S. History (w/ AP option) Senior: Government & Economics

I also took a social sciences elective my senior year, Intro to Law.

And that above was basically what everyone was required to have as far as social sciences were concerned (well, of course minus the Law course).

Oh, quite possibly. Remember: he doesn't show it very openly, but it's pretty obvious that DiMartino _likes_ Daria, and any other student who is willing to make the effort. DiMartino's neurotic rages are born of frustration, and one source of frustration for him is the unwillingness of most of his students to give a damn. If Quinn starts to care, DiMartino will like her. He won't gush on about it (like O'Neill does): in fact he'll probably respond by challenging her even more. A scene formed in my head after posting this:

(The Fashion Club is standing in the hallway, within earshot of Daria. Sandi looks at her disdainfully, then turns to Quinn.)

Sandi: I can't believe such a cute guy is dating your...cousin, or whatever. What could he possibly see in a geeky brain like her?

Tiffany: Yeah...geeky...

(Stacy looks uncertain but doesn't say anything. Quinn clenches her fists and grits her teeth in an attempt to control herself. She fails.)

Voiceover of David's comments about her "loser friends", Daria's supportive advice, and Mr. DeMartino's praise of her abilities.

Quinn: That "geeky brain" is my sister, and she's already accomplished more in her life than a loser like you ever will Sandi.

Sandi: Excuse me? Loser? Quinn, given this little outburst, and your recent brain-like behavior, I afraid that, as Fashion Club President, I'm going to have to call an emergency meeting to reconsider your Club status.

Quinn: Let me save you the effort. I quit. I don't need this mutual appreciation socirty anymore. Go find yourself another sycophant.

(Quinn turns and stomps away. Sandi and Tiffany look stunned. Stacy hides a smile. Quinn grabs a stunned Daria by the arm.)

Quinn: C'mon Daria. Let's go have lunch.

Daria: Quinn, I never thought I'd say this, but I'm actually proud of you.

Quinn: Thanks Daria. For the first time in a long while, I actually feel proud of me too.

I'm afraid that probably won't happen until the final two episodes of "Daria", probably. They need the whole "Quinn's-in-the-Fashion-Club-and-popular-and-a-total-antithesis-to-Daria" schtick until the very end. If Quinn rejected the Fashion Club now, part of the momentum of the show would be lost. They would need a DAMN good replacement for the 'Club, and I'm afraid that any replacement would have to be shallower and bitchier than anything Sandi could dream of.

I'd like to see those developments change her into a person who can finally outgrow the Fashion Mob too.

Maybe it's a convergance...

Daria begins to care about her looks more and lightens up a little in order to keep a boyfriend (cause this Tom thing ain't a fixed quantity, y'know)...

...while Quinn starts to lose the fear that depth and smarts will make her a social loser...

and they both end up somewhere in the middle, a bit more healthy and able to stand each other as people.

We've already seen the impossible -- Daria not only does something nice for Quinn (that's happened before) in the scene in IIFY where Quinn's bawling her eyes out over her tutor, but actually consoles and ENCOURAGES her...

This presumed convergence kills the characterizations that make the series work -- but maybe that's the point, because the producers will be tying it up to end the series.

That's the problem with caricatures... work with them long enough and care about them, and they'll turn into characters that seek to better themselves!

True, but someone who deliberately rejects all human contact won't be happy, normally speaking.

The extreme irony of Quinn's fear of being "unpopular" is that her popularity actually comes from her deeper personality, which is visible at times peeping out from under her mask. That's why Quinn's truly popular, and Sandi isn't: because deep down Quinn is a much nicer person than Sandi is.

Seems that a cue may have been taken from the popular fanfic portrayal of Stacey as being more underfoot than being a member of the FC...did you notice the bit with her and David, where she was actually apologizing to him for her ignorance regarding the subject they were discussing and -without even arguing him like Quinn did initially- made it clear she wanted to do better? And then it just folded when she found out Stacy and Tiffany had dropped David.

I dunno. Anyone?

Stacy was apologizing because that's what she does at this point. He gave her what she thought was the "stupid" look her mother gives her. She's an extremely insecure person, and it showed right there. Then when she found out that (note what really happened) David dropped Sandi and Tiffany and they didn't tell her, she completely fell apart.

Unfornately, I missed the movie. But I've read about it, and my roomate saw it. (I completely forgot and watched "Hook" instead, which I can't say I precisely regret, since Hook is a good movie, as it is). I don't think Stacy is that far behind. She might decide to follow Quinn out, but she's still totally codependent. This could explain why she apologised about her ignorance, though I'd have to see the scene to be sure. He was the only one around, so she bowed to him by default.

Realize that this is a concession on my part. I was among those that supported the Smart Stacy Hypothesis. The Stacy presented in various fanfics was neat, but I don't think the Stacy of "Daria" is like this at all. She's nice on her own, probably, but she'll always bow to whomever seems to have the upper hand.

According to my roomate, Sandi actually got the highest score, but lied about it to not appear "geeky". By my hypothesis, Stacy would be the one to do that. Speaking of Sandi's score, it doesn't surprise me terribly. I always knew she was smarter than Tiffany (most vertebrate life forms are), and probably more so than Stacy (never said she was a genius). Her getting a better score than Quinn is mildly surprising, but not very.

PeterTHXDaryl Sawyer

Tiff had the lowest score, and Sandi did indeed lie: she got a 920 to Quinn's 955 (there's a quick cut to Sandi's paper).

Her's was lower, and Quinn's smarter (but she'll never admit it).

Tarvok said:

She'd be better off following Quinn than she is right now, following Sandi. At least Quinn would be less likely to abuse her.

Plus, Dave was an intidimidating authority figure, from the perspective of Stacy (or any member of the FC). He was a college-age man: they're just teenage girls.

One of the reasons why David was able to get through to Quinn with that little speech was his social status. It was brought forcefully home to Quinn that she might seem shallow and worthless _to someone of higher social status than her_.

Stacy didn't seem _stupid_ in the movie. She seemed neurotic, insecure, self-abusive, and confused.

Look: it's very clear that Stacy has some serious neuroses (and that Sandi in particular uses them to dominate and abuse her through). She's close to a complete nervous breakdown. Someone in that sort of state is expending so much psychological energy simply staying (semi-) sane that they don't have much to spare for formal problem-solving.

Sandi's mother, Linda, is clearly a highly intelligent (but nasty) woman. It's not surprising that her daughter matches her in both aspects of her character.

Sincerely Yours, Jordan -- "Whoever would be a man must be a non-conformist" (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

Actually, everything I've seen of Quinn says she's just as likely to abuse Stacy (and has) as Sandi, she'd just be nicer about it. Quinn treats her toys well, Sandi is the pull-the-doll's-head-off type.

Think of her treatment of the 3-Js, she totally abuses them, but is always pleasant and polite about it.

So yes, Stacy is much better off with methadone-Quinn than heroin-Sandi.

Of course, we may be using different meanings of 'abuse'.

Wiliam George Ferguson said:

ROFL!!! Good one!

She only "abuses" the 3 J's to the extent that they permit her to, and not one step further. And I suspect from their behavior that this is exactly how they want to be treated.

She does NOT go out of her way to hurt their feelings. She is selfish, not cruel.

Heh ... very good analogy :)

However, there's an important point here. The way Stacy is, she doesn't have the self-confidence to leap from following Sandi to being independent. Maybe she needs to follow Quinn for a while first.

She'd get hurt less that way.

I disagree entirely, she abuses (exploits would be a better term) the three J's because they're _Guys_. It's all occurs within the context of the whole dating thing. In fact in her view, they're not being exploited. They're getting the benefit of her wonderful presence for a couple of hours in exchange for picking up the cheque in Chez Pierre. OK she has a rather bizarre sense of values, a very inflated ego and a certain talent for manipulation but there's nothing really malicious about her.

Michael Morton >==========================================================< School of Information Systems | Everything is linear if University of East Anglia | plotted on log-log with

[responding to Jordan Bassior saying Quinn wouldn't abuse Stacy]

As I said, we may be using different meanings of 'abuse'. Quinn uses and manipulates people, treating them as objects more than people, every bit as much as Sandi. In fact, Quinn is arguably much better at it than Sandi. All we have seen Sandi able to dominate/manipulate is the FC, her clique, while Quinn has shown the ability to manipulate a wide variety of people in a wide variety of settings.

You're right that Quinn does not act maliciously, just without regard for the interests of others. In a lot of ways, Quinn is a classic Randian, she is completely self-centered, but intelligent enough to realize the benefits to self of treating others civilly. I can only remember her acting with overt vindictiveness twice, when she tried to rat out Daria for breaking Helen's Commandments, and sitting in the back of the bus watching out the back window with satisfaction, at the end of Daria Hunter (and in the 2nd case, if she refrained being at least a little vindictive we'd have to start calling her Saint Quinn).

Quinn, as I said, is completely self-centered, but she understands and very effectively uses the technique of treating others well to get them to do what she wants. If Stacy is going to be codependent, she'll take a lot less damage being codependent on Quinn than on Sandi.

On the other hand, that's not a terribly healthy situation for Quinn.

In article , William George Ferguson writes:

Quinn, much like Sandi, takes after her mother a lot. Helen knows how to use the catch-more-flies-with-honey routine (though she overdoes it), at least with those outside her family, and Quinn's probably grown up watching this act. Linda, OTOH, doesn't bother with honey or vinegar, instead going straight to battery acid. Not the best role model Sandi could have had.

Quinn's also picked up her mother's get-what-you-want-at-any-cost attitude. Consider what sort of impression must it have left on her mind, growing up with such immortal lines as, "Absolutely not! It's unproffesional, unethical, possibly *illegal* and I'll have no part of it! Okay, I'll do it."

"Classic" Randian? I wasn't aware we came in differant flavors. ;7

Speaking as an objectivist (or "Randian," if you prefer), she's got a good grasp on the "tit for tat" part of relationship management, but she's still got a long way to go towards figuring out what types of relationships are actually *healthy.*

Maybe it's just the Rand referance, but I suddenly just had a flashback to one of her books...

Ellsworth: All things are simple when you reduce them to fundamentals. You'd be surprised at just how few fundamentals there are. Only two, perhaps. To explain all of us. It's the untangling, the reducing that's difficult - That's why people don't like to bother. I don't think they'd like the results, either.

Dominique: I don't mind. I know what I am. Go ahead and say it. I'm just a bitch.

Ellsworth: Don't fool yourself, my dear. You're much worse than a bitch. You're a saint. Which shows why saints are dangerous and undesirable.

...Now I've got this warped image of Quinn as Dominique, putting out a fashion newsletter and doing her damnedest to bring down Daria, Jodie and all the other good guys. Yeargh. Thanks for the image. :p

It could evolve into one if she weans Stacy off of her. The way she's headed, she just *might* be mature and capable enough to do it by the end of the series.

What worries me is that, with Quinn being too intelligent, resiliant and subversive and Tiffany's brain being like a wind sock anyway (empty and blowing whichever way the wind is), Stacy is Sandi's only real whipping-girl, which the latter is definitely *not* going to want to give up easily. She may end up the focus of whatever power struggle ensues between Sandi & Quinn.

I don't think Stacy could take having to choose at this point... She'd probably snap. Quinn might be able to surgically implant a spine in her first, but she'd need to get Sandi out of the picture for a while. Hmm... Machiavelli, anyone? ;7 -IdentityCrisis

I think the PSAT scores were telling: Quinn 955, Stacy 940, Sandi 920, Tiffany 902. Quinn was underacheiving. I think we saw close to maximum performance from the other three.

I'm not so sure. My take is that Sandi isn't particularly bright, is bitter about it, and uses the nastiness she's learned from her mother to cover up. She's vile.

My take on Stacy is that she's of average intelligence, wishes she were smarter, and has been so emotionally abused by her parents because of it that she's adopted victimhood as her lot in life. She's pitiable.

Tiffany's too stupid to know how stupid she is. I think she might have been lying about that 902.

I'm drawn to the portrayal of Daria and Quinn as young adults in the episode in which Daria writes a story about what she wants her life to be. That Quinn had realized how shallow she had been, but still married Jamie, who sounds like a prick with a capital P, and has at three kids by him. Somehow I don't want to see exactly that Quinn, but someone who goes after someone who is a bit more... Well, smarter.

Sure, if you're just having a short fling, families may be irrelevant. But if you're trying to establish something lasting, as Tom and Daria seem to be saying they want, then families are a big part of the equation. Unless Tom's going to disown his family and never see them again, Daria *will* be dating THEM. If Daria can't stand Tom's family or vice versa, that's going to have a significant effect on their relationship, and she *shouldn't* just pretend they don't matter.

Check out Ann Landers or Dear Abby sometime, and see how many of the letters are of the "I married this great guy, and now his mother/father/aunt/kid is making my life miserable" variety. Those people bought the notion that their partner's family didn't matter until it was too late.

They never stopped being friends. They went through a rough period.

His name is Link, though "Daria Jr." has a ring to it. :-)

It was.

Ok... I'm going to comment on what I found to be one of the most stunning parts of IIFY - Jake.

Wasn't anyone else surprised by that whole thing with Helen and Jake at the end? Jake "make a funny"! He's not one dimensional... yippee!

I was pleasantly surprised. I like Jake, I think that his love for Helen is very real, and I'm glad to see him finally starting to get over the darker parts of his past.

I was. I nearly fell off of the couch when he gave that smart-assed look over his shoulder. Not only is he capable of being aware of what's going on, but he recognizes (and can cope with) the fact that he usually *isn't* well enough to play off of it. I didn't realize he was so conciously aware of his problems.

Hope for the future! Seems like alot of the main characters are showing improvement (Kevin & Brittany aside, of course). Now if only Stacy could grow more spine and staying power than the average cream-puff... ;7

"Helen". Not "Jane". Though it's the same actress. Incidentally, I agree with you that this was well handled: Helen's picking up on this shows that she's far from oblivious to the nuances of situations.

Yep. What's even better is that Daria only realized this because Quinn and Helen pointed it out to her.

And is equally harmful, when it starts to interfere with the important things in her life ... as it was doing in the movie.

And it seems to have really brought back his enthusiasm for teaching, somewhat. He didn't see the patented Morgendorfer sarcastic definition of Manifest Destiny as "suspiciously good", this time.

A long awaited development I was afraid we'd never see.

She seemed to have some questions, though.

Hopefully, they'll continue this development.

Yep, and hopefully, they will continue to let down their masks.

Oh, yeah...

When DiMartino first met Daria, he was suspicious that she'd been coached (maybe he _always_ asks that question in his first class). Only after greater experience with her did he realize that Daria _really IS_ that intelligent.

DiMartino knew that Quinn was Daria's sister (how many "Morgendorffers" are there in Lawndale) and was perhaps not totally surprised that Quinn was bright too. He'd just spent much of the summer _with_ Daria, being exposed to her intelligence, too.

Who exactly is "DiMartino"? Is he "Uncle" Anthony DeMartino's long-lost cousin twice-removed? A sinister imposter? A spelling mistake that's been perpetrated for four long years, even though the proper spelling is on more websites and "Daria" books and materials than I can possibly imagine? :-)

[about DiMartino actually doing well as camp counselor]

I have six older sisters and an older brother. When I started school (more decades ago than I want to think about), all of my teachers in the 1st and 2nd grades had taught all seven of my older siblings (One whom was Valedictorian of the high school the year I started 1st grade).

I'm wondering if we are going to see some scenes this year of a teacher holding up Daria's academics to Quinn.

I take full responsibility for this because it was kinda my fault for insinuating that this is the first time that Quinn had DeMartino in class. This is of course incorrect as was pointed out before by some helpful soul. So this means that he has had her in class before and knows the typical ditzy Quinn. So I don't think he saw Morgendorffer and expected her to be smart like Daria.

I could see O'Niel doing it as an "inspirational" thing. Especially since that would probably be among the very *worst* ways to inspire her.
