Two(ish) thoughts on Jane's Addiction (Spoilers)

I've got to get up early and go try fix a botch-up that my friendly bank did to my account, so I figure I'll get my start on a good night's sleep by reading Usenet.:)

Warning: This is one big IMHO. You've been warned.

First: I sincerely apologize for calling Tom a jerk.:) Turns out Daria is the jerk in this episode. She seems/seemed far too territorial when it comes to Jane, like Jane is the lone life-preserver of sanity in an ocean filled with Kevins and Brittanys, and she'll be damned if anyone's sharing with her. Back to Tom: Do we have a new recurring/semi-regular character in the works?

Second: I must compliment the writers for making the final scene. This, combined with Tom's suitability for future episodes made the perfect end-of-season cliffhanger without actually being a cliffhanger.:)

Third: That pizza place should serve pizzas in bite-sized portions. It's all anyone ever eats!

Daria did the same thing in "See Jane Run" of course. I'm inclined to cut Daria some slack--in fact I'm inclined to cut Daria a great deal of slack anyway--but consider things from her perspective: Jane is quite likely the only friend Daria has ever had in her life. Cute little Quinn has always been the center of attention, Daria the "brain" has probably always been unpopular, ridiculed, teased, etc. I'm sure we all know about that--right? So Daria hasn't had any "practice" at having and keeping a friend. It's not as easy as merely going out for pizza and exchanging one-liners. Daria is going to have to realize that her friend is also going to be a friend to someone else. She can't keep her exclusively to herself. If you hold a butterfly tightly in your hand, it dies.

Of course what Daria needs is some friends of her own, maybe a guy. That probably isn't going to happen. Not that Daria couldn't attract and keep a guy. I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that a guy could very easily fall in love with Daria, if you haven't already like I have. But Daria isn't going to be easy for just any guy to "catch."

Another "growthful" episode. Shows they're going to gradually have the characters change. Daria isn't going to remain static.

Exactly. Plus, cause Jane's her ONLY real friend, the jealousy is all that much more intense.

Yes, but treating one's *friend* this way is a lot nastier. And more foolish.

Daria also is rarely as rude to someone who *hasn't* offended her as she was to Tom. That was also exceptional.

Daria was being jealous both of Tom and Jane. Of Tom, for "taking Jane away from her", and of Jane, for finding a boyfriend (and the fact that Tom was a nice guy made it all the worse for Daria, there was no way she could see herself as "saving Jane" from him, though she tried at the beginning).

Yes. You generally have to make more than one try ... as Tom did.

I think that Tom sensed that about her too. Certainly he made a considerable effort to get Daria to at least accept him.

Well he DID offend her--without realizing it. He was intruding on an important area of Daria's life. How could he have been expected to know he was stepping on that landmine? Of course there's a lesson in that: Sometimes when someone behaves badly towards you it might be because of a transgression you're completely unaware of. You can't take that as a justification to escalate.

A classic example of the "love me, love my dog" situation. If Tom was going to have a relationship with Jane he was going to have to mend fences with Daria. It was clever of him to realize that and classy of him to be able to execute it. Daria at least gets points for allowing him to present his case without completely blowing him off, as she's quite capable of doing.

Yes, but Daria couldn't reasonably have expected Jane not to get a boyfriend simply because Daria doesn't have one yet.

Which Tom didn't.

Well ... it's also possible that Tom could have broken up Jane's friendship with Daria. He chose the "good" rather than "evil" solution to his problem.

She calmed down eventually.
