Does anyone have a schedule for Daria on MTV here ?
The Optusvision guide just lists "Daria" (real helpful that) for most nights (Although Friday may 28 has a description "The whole school goes on a harbour cruise to raise money via casino gambling).
Yesterday was "Lane Miserables", (season 3) will they be screening repeats now or what ?

Not that it really matters that much. However, people shouldn't be intentionally posting things that arent't true (I know that is the way of half of Usenet).
Now I know whom to blame for the delay ;) At least it's not completely MTV's fault (except for the bonehead who put "New episodes in May" on the Daria part of MTV.com -- they have to have had some idea that the episodes might not be ready by then)
I find it odd that a lot of US viewers (myself included) would have felt "cheated" if the episodes were aired somewhere else first -- we truly are a selfish nation ;)

I, OTOH, feel cheated when my PBS affiliate stops airing the Red Dwarf eps shot in 1993, and then suddenly starts airing Red Dwarf VII. Now, for some reason, Rimmer is gone, and I don't know why! I think I get a smidgen of the feeling foreign fans of US shows have towards the wayward methods of distribution. :P

It has to do with his alter ego, Ace Rimmer. I can elaborate if you like.
But IRL, it was because he wanted to concentrate on his other TV series, "The Brittas Empire", where he plays the Rimmer-like character Gordon Brittas who's in charge of a leisure centre. Very funny series that ran for a few years. The fact that he is in total control of the leisure centre gives scope for much more spectacular incompetence than Rimmer achieved in Red Dwarf (excepting when he managed to kill all the crew of course).
He returns to Red Dwarf in the subsequent (and hopefully final, given how crap is was) series Red Dwarf VIII.
Well C5 treat Daria fairly well (apart from the censoring of course). Much worse is the BBC's treatment of the Simpsons and ITV's coverage of Sabrina. In both cases they have only bought the first couple of seasons and are now repeating them endlessly, which is very frustrating given that we know new episodes continue to be made and we're now several years behind. It's like living in a time warp.
(BTW Has anyone heard of a band called "Steps"? I just turned the TV on and there's this band that looks like a bunch of Barbie dolls and Kens plastically miming their way through a set of numbers on Top of the Pops. They are absolutely hideous and totally false.)

No, unless MTV are showing it on satellite. Channel 4 showed it twice but no longer have the rights to it. I think the best we can hope is that Channel 5 buy it. The trouble is C5 picture quality is still poor where I am.
It was on once a week on Saturdays at 5pm, but we've now seen all the episodes that have been screened by MTV in the US, so I expect there will be a hiatus of at least a month as new episodes don't screen in the USA until the end of June.

OK, here's what happened in the episode "Lane Miserables".
Basically, the entire lane family return home - coincidentally at the same time.
The older sister's business in Latin America (selling hannd crafted photo frames) was wiped out by a volcana)
Older brother broke up with his wife.
Father has finished photographing something.
Then I think it's penny's kids run away from home, and come to stay at their garandparents, and then penny comes to get them.
The returned lanes basically take over the entire house, and after Jane is unable to get anything done (leaves her room because brother wants to watch tv in there) can't use the phone because sister is on the phone to the ambassador of the country with the volcano) she goes to stay with the morgendorrfers.
Trent moves out to live in the tank, and stops by the mordgendorrfers to tell Jane, who is having dinner with the M's. Trent starts complimenting M's on the fodd (some type of pasta), until he is invited to stay.
Helen goes powerwalking ("coincidentally" on the same route Jane goes running) and asks her questions about daria - Jane's response is something along the lines of "3 questions - no betrayals, immunnity from prosecutiuon".
Helen's topics: Drugs, Depression, Sex when she asks "sex" she say "no too easy can I have another question"
In typical stle this is mirrored later in the episode, when Jake asks her "age" "height" "farvorite color" when Jane answers "black" he says "too easy, can I have anbother question".
(there is a subplot that Jake has no idea what is going on in Daria and Quinn's lives - at one point Helen asks him how old Quinn is he anwers "Eleven. Ish." )
Umm lets see.
Jake and Helen fall into parenting mode with Trent.
Oh yes. Monique arrives to take Trent out.
Jake calls Quinn "Quinn, your date is here!" and goes to answer the door, and when he says Moniques says something along the lines of "I really don't know my kids". Then he does the date line, but with Trent instead.
As Trent and Monique walk down the driveway Daria is watching the window. Leading to a Quinn style sibling bonding. Quinn starts raving "just because a guy is dating someone, doesn't mean he's unavailable unless he's dating me".
Then there's a fantasy section with Quinn's ideal man, she's some sort of princess or something, and the guy pledges his love "or until you find someone better" to which she replies "can you get me a soda, in a crystal goblet".
Then Daria's fantasy sequence.
She's 30something, Living with Trent, who is still unemployed/In mystic Spyral.
Having to pull double shifts at the gene-splicing lab to pay for Trent- Junior's glasses ("thick ones").
Trent says he'll get his shit together, get a job and whatnot, Daria asks where is the man she married, Trent says "we never got married, remember, I slept in that day".
Jane and Quinn meanwhile are calling Daria back to reality, and she says "Oh, I'm just getting over something."
When Trent gets back late from his date, Jake and Helen do the whole parenting thing, and Trent explains there aren't any rules at their house. To which Jane answers "expect for the one about building fires in rooms without fireplaces".
Ohm and Trent was late back because he spent X hours breaking up with Monique. Jane tells him that they break up every-other week and don't belong together.
There is a scene in Daria's room, Trent says how cool the room is, and lies down on the bed. Daria and Trent are talking when Jane walks in.
Mrs Lane meanwhile has lost it and comes around to the Morgendorffers and says to Helen "I need my house back".
Then all the Lanes sits together around the Dinner table until hostilities break out.
Jane and Trent leave the morgendorffers, on his way out the door Trent says to Daria its a pity she isn't older, he could go out with her (followed by his laugh-cough).
Then there is another fantasy sequence, I think the setting was the same as Quinn's from earlier, but with Trent "cleaned-up" telling Daria she is the best thing that ever happened to him. WHen she returns to reality she says "damn."

The decision to change the US premier date back, in itself, didn't cause any of this, IMHO. The problem was when the person who made the decision, neglected or decided not to tell the rest of MTV what they decided.

Yeah. I just couldn't help baiting the TEB/anti-TEB contingents. As you can tell, sometimes I get a kick out of throwing figurative grenades. (Literal grenades make too much of a mess,) BTW, you can add "Caroline in the City" to the list of TV casualties that couldn't adequately deal with romantic issues-- the romantic issues wound up dominating the show, instead of, oh, say character development, and, well, that killed the ratings. "It Happened One Nut"
Scence by Scene episode summary.
The episode begins in DeMartino's class, with the students receiving the results of their standardised career aptitude tests.
Jane finds out she is suited to be an accountant, (because she answers straight C's on the test).
Kevin it turns out is suited to be a petrol dispenser (oops, "gasoline" dispenser for you yanks), but misreads it and thinks he is going to be an oil tycoon.
Daria won't tell Jane what her test revealed
Dinner at the Morgendorffers
Quinn's test showed she should be a neck model
Helen threatens to turn up at school to find out what Daria's result was
Daria gives in - turns out she should be a mortician.
Quinn asks Jake for $500 to put together a portfolio
Jake is about to go to the bank when Helen tells him to sit down because he is not giving anyone $500, but he asks if he can go to the bank anyway.
Helen says that the girls should both get jobs - or if not there is a counselling facility available at the school - which Daria chooses.
Quinn asks Jake for $500 to put together a work wardrobe - Jake says "is that the door" and leaves.
When Daria arrives for the counselling, the volunteer counsellor is Tiffany "Aren't you that girl from Quinn's house?"
Tiffany starts reading the counselling spiel to Daria - at about 5 words per minute.
Daria decides on the Job instead.
Quinn's Job.
Quinn gets a job at a pet store "Our Furry & Scaly Friends" - first place she applies
Daria doesn't bother looking for a job, but Jake has already lined one up though one of his contacts - a nut store at the Mall - "It's a nutty nutty nutty World"
At the interview for Daria's job - the manager rants about how he doesn't like nepotism and cronyism, and that Daria will have to meet the high standards of employment - When Kevin walks through the door saying he is for the job.
When Kevin says he can pack nuts he is hired on the spot.
-Commercial-
The training for the job consists of being told to smile and welcome the customers with a line about the nutty nutty world, emphasising the smiling, because there is a guarantee that if they do not smile, the nuts are free and come out of their pay.
Quinn's training is next, and consists of the pet store guy showing her around the various animals, which Quinn doesn't like and suggests she saw herself dealing with the cute animals.
The manager tells Daria and Kevin not to let anyone behind the counter, and to smile.
The first customer comes to buy some nuts - Pistachios, and DARIA SMILES!
Quinn lets one of the canaries "Travis" escape but says someone bought it, and pays for it herself.
Britanny comes up to the stand and has a go at Kevin about smiling at the customers, they wind up agreeing to one smile per customer.
Oh yeah, and every time Trent greets the customers he screws up the greeting/slogan.
Next is the first-day post mortem at the Morgendorffers - Jake walks in asking if peanut butter sandwiches are for dinner - Daria of course smells like nuts from her Job. And Daria asks Quinn if she knows aything about a canary found in the Mall's airconditioning intake.
At Janes
-Sick Sad World- Extraterrestrial Restaurant Restrooms
Jane offers to come and visit Daria at work, on the assumption that "Misery Loves Company" - Daria agrees (so long as she tells no- one) and says that is the basis of their whole friendship.
Trent walks in asking Jane to make some coffee (He and Jesse look like hell, because they were up all night working on a song - but so far have only found one chord they like. They can't agree however whether it is Am7 or ADim), and then says he would like some peanuts.
-Commercial-
Daria has to pay $15.00 for not smiling, but is made employee of the day.
Trent Jesse and Jane go to the Mall, Jane tries to split as soon as they arrive, but Trent says he has peanuts on the brain, and wants to go to the new nut store. Jane pops back and tries to get them to go somewhere else.
Meanwhile in the pet store - Quinn is telling a kid that he can't have a puppy - because it is her favorite, and tries to give him another. She notices that Joanne the Boa contrictor has escaped.
Back to Trent, Jesse & Jane - as they are walking toward the store, Trent and Jesse start working on a song "Hijacks my Brain - Like a moth to a flame" and Jane desperately tries to divert their attention away from the nut store.
Daria sees them approaching and hides in the back room.
Trent orders some peanuts, and Kevin can't find them (in fact each time a customer asked Kevin for nuts, he had to get Daria to show him where they were) so he calls Daria - who of course won't come out.
Trent decides he'll go and have something else instead - he and Jesse leave.
Jane goes into the back room to talk to Daria (Kevin tries to stop her - but Jane says the rule about no unauthorised people behind the counter has changed, and he lets her through).
Jane tries to get Daria to go have a snack somewhere, but she stays in the back room instead, and tells Jane to get out.
Jane then calls Helen at work, and tells her that Daria is being treated badly at the job ("she is in the backroom, while they have a male employee on the front counter"), and Helen says she should have known better than to trust something Jake set up with one of his "sleazy contacts"
Quinn gets Joey, Jeffy and Jamie to find the Boa constrictor, which they first argue about how to do, and decide to drop "snake food" around, and let out all the rodents.
Helen arrives at the mall to collect Daria - walks straight behind the counter (Kevin says "you can go through now") into the back room, grabs Daria and leaves having a go at the Manger on the way out ("you're not exploiting my daughter any longer"). As they are leaving Kevin calls to Daria for help, because his apron is stuck in the cash register.
In the pet store - chaos has broken out.
At school near the lockers - Jane and Daria are talking when Quinn arrives and complains that Daria has ruined her life - because she has a rash on her neck (she is allergic to pistachio nuts).
Daria says she has just found Job Satisfaction.

Needless to say, on this thread it seems to already be confirmed that the episodes in question, DID in fact air. It is always best to leave the line "that's impossible" for such things as square circles and contradictories being true at the same time in the same respect (the principle of noncontradiction).
My concern is that someone's reputation has been unfairly attacked, granted with the use of many smileys :-), but keep in mind that when you utter the "that's impossible" line in human affairs, you are potentially setting yourself up.
Perhaps apologies are in order? At least after June 30?

All feelings of nationalism aside, MTV just doesn't do what it says it's going to do often, and as rich often notes, their treatment of Daria in the programming schedule is "totally heinous", to quote the fashion club.
I've often wondered if they actually wear suits at MTV. I doubt that's the real problem (pseudo-executives?), because TV executives have a way of treating their best quality programs in a shabby manner.

The problems at MTV appear to be mostly organizational in nature-- I don't think that they're "against" any show that does well-- they just have to get the details down. (Remeber the old saying-- "God is in the details?")
I'll have to disagree to some extent on a few grounds. First off, if broadcasters were against any kind of experimental or ground-breaking shows, nobody would ever have approved those shows in the first place. (Remember "Cop Rock?" Yes, it was dreadful, but at least they gave it a shot to make sure that a musical crime show wouldn't work.) They're simply in the business of making a profit. I will agree with you, however, that shows like MH and MSCL are not money-makers, and tend to get the hatchet
That said, I don't agree that Daria falls completely into the same category as MH and MSCL-- they were shows with small followings on large networks. Daria is a show with a numerically similar-sized following, maybe, but it's on a network whose average Nielsen share is in the range of 1.0-2.0, compared to major networks whose average share is in the 6.0-9.0 range. MTV and other cable networks can't be compared to the major broadcast webs in that respect.
Daria hasn't been cancelled because it's been MTV's #2 ratings grabber-- when new eps were run last summer, it got the second-highest ratings of any MTV show. (#1? The Real World, of course.) It's not quite as cultish as you might think (in terms of the ratio of viewers to the average number of MTV viewers). As for advertising, well, during reruns there's no point in paying attention there-- but during new eps, all of the advertisers are heavy hitters-- almost all are Fortune 500 companies or holdings. That says quite a lot about the show-- even if the demo is hard to pin, the ratings *are* there-- at least enough to persuade Very Large Companies to plunk down cash on ads.
Meanwhile, shows like MH, MSCL, and "Dr. Quinn" (to name another major network show with a small but fanatical following) all got small, consistent ratings, that, when compared to the average ratings for the broadcat networks, were lower than average. It's the same reason that NewsRadio and Caroline in the City were cancelled-- they were getting ratings, but their ratings were well below-average compared to the kind of ratings that successful shows on a major web can generate. In those cases, it's a no-brainer. You pull the losing show out, fans or no fans, and try a bunch of crappy pilots and hope that one of them becomes rrrreally popular. And who knows? You might even get a bunch of merchandising tie-ins!
True-- a show with a cultish (i.e. small) following back then *really* had problems.
Well, while I'll agree that it's sometimes too easy (and a bit fun) to bash MTV, they DO do one thing very very well-- they take chances on ideas that very few other channels would ever *dream* of taking on, even with someone else's money.
Alright, alright, I'll admit it-- I actually *do* respect MTV for taking just those kinds of chances. But that doesn't meant that they can't be rrrreally irritating.

This reminds me of another former MTV show that was also well done - The State. It did fairly well on MTV and was picked up as a Saturday Night Live sort of thing on CBS(?). Well, I think it got cancelled, like, ten minutes after its first network airing (it got like a .3 share -- or some other ridiculously low number).

Actually the "Differin gel" commercials are far more irritating. "I mean, it can be really hard" to quote the actress.
While I can hope the demographic is changing, I seem to remember seeing in the press clips that it was doing well with the teenage and young women's groups. Maybe Martin Pollard can say off the top of his head?
Well....I guess you have a point. But beating up on the studios is a time honored tradition, like complaining about school food (haven't done that for a while!). Can we abandon such a long-standing tradition? Say it isn't so!

OK, here's what happened in the episode "Lane Miserables".
Basically, the entire lane family return home - coincidentally at the same time.
The older sister's business in Latin America (selling hannd crafted photo frames) was wiped out by a volcana)
Older brother broke up with his wife.
Father has finished photographing something.
Then I think it's penny's kids run away from home, and come to stay at their garandparents, and then penny comes to get them.
The returned lanes basically take over the entire house, and after Jane is unable to get anything done (leaves her room because brother wants to watch tv in there) can't use the phone because sister is on the phone to the ambassador of the country with the volcano) she goes to stay with the morgendorrfers.
Trent moves out to live in the tank, and stops by the mordgendorrfers to tell Jane, who is having dinner with the M's. Trent starts complimenting M's on the fodd (some type of pasta), until he is invited to stay.
Helen goes powerwalking ("coincidentally" on the same route Jane goes running) and asks her questions about daria - Jane's response is something along the lines of "3 questions - no betrayals, immunnity from prosecutiuon".
Helen's topics: Drugs, Depression, Sex when she asks "sex" she say "no too easy can I have another question"
In typical stle this is mirrored later in the episode, when Jake asks her "age" "height" "farvorite color" when Jane answers "black" he says "too easy, can I have anbother question".
(there is a subplot that Jake has no idea what is going on in Daria and Quinn's lives - at one point Helen asks him how old Quinn is he anwers "Eleven. Ish." )
Umm lets see.
Jake and Helen fall into parenting mode with Trent.
Oh yes. Monique arrives to take Trent out.
Jake calls Quinn "Quinn, your date is here!" and goes to answer the door, and when he says Moniques says something along the lines of "I really don't know my kids". Then he does the date line, but with Trent instead.
As Trent and Monique walk down the driveway Daria is watching the window. Leading to a Quinn style sibling bonding. Quinn starts raving "just because a guy is dating someone, doesn't mean he's unavailable unless he's dating me".
Then there's a fantasy section with Quinn's ideal man, she's some sort of princess or something, and the guy pledges his love "or until you find someone better" to which she replies "can you get me a soda, in a crystal goblet".
Then Daria's fantasy sequence.
She's 30something, Living with Trent, who is still unemployed/In mystic Spyral.
Having to pull double shifts at the gene-splicing lab to pay for Trent- Junior's glasses ("thick ones").
Trent says he'll get his shit together, get a job and whatnot, Daria asks where is the man she married, Trent says "we never got married, remember, I slept in that day".
Jane and Quinn meanwhile are calling Daria back to reality, and she says "Oh, I'm just getting over something."
When Trent gets back late from his date, Jake and Helen do the whole parenting thing, and Trent explains there aren't any rules at their house. To which Jane answers "expect for the one about building fires in rooms without fireplaces".
Ohm and Trent was late back because he spent X hours breaking up with Monique. Jane tells him that they break up every-other week and don't belong together.
There is a scene in Daria's room, Trent says how cool the room is, and lies down on the bed. Daria and Trent are talking when Jane walks in.
Mrs Lane meanwhile has lost it and comes around to the Morgendorffers and says to Helen "I need my house back".
Then all the Lanes sits together around the Dinner table until hostilities break out.
Jane and Trent leave the morgendorffers, on his way out the door Trent says to Daria its a pity she isn't older, he could go out with her (followed by his laugh-cough).
Then there is another fantasy sequence, I think the setting was the same as Quinn's from earlier, but with Trent "cleaned-up" telling Daria she is the best thing that ever happened to him. WHen she returns to reality she says "damn."
End of Show.
